This is the most common fault on post 2001 M-Bs. It is often referred to as the 3rd brake light problem.

Use the Search function ^^^ to look through the archives for some ideas. Fortunately the replacement unit is more sturdy provided you do not overtighten it.

I haven't ordered from them yet, but they seem to have pretty good prices. I looked at this other Merecedes OEM parts website: getmercedesparts.com and parts.com seems to alway beat them in price. When I did my recent maintance, I got my filters from here: http://www.autopartsworld.com/ I might try out parts.com next time and see the price difference.

I just bought my 209 last month from a mb dealer and realized the 3rd red lense was falling out a few days later. The price was $130 but they wound up just giving to me for free. I dont know about aftermarket ones but the oem does have the little benz emblem on the middle if you care about little things like that.

I haven't have to replace mine yet but I did replaced one on my friend's 2006 clk 500. It a very stupid design and that's why the part broke off easy from just vibration.

I replaced mine twice. A few tips I have learned are...Don't slam the trunk and tighten the nuts by hand.

My 3rd brake light broke on Monday. This will be number 3 for me. My dad's CLK broke 3 weeks ago.

Talk about a design flaw. Mercedes fixed his because it was a safety hazard.

Yup.......the outer edges of the len is forced onto the trunk when you tight the 2 screws. Even if you tight just about right by hand, it still gonna cause it crack in a long run due to heat if you live in area like Arizona, las Vegas...etc where temp can get up to 115F every years.

Yeah, we had 95 degree temps. and the car was in a blacktop parking lot for 3 hours. When I got to it, the lense was just laying on the back bumper.

I have joined the club. Just picked up my part ($132), and hopefully will have time to install it today.

My original completely seperated from the bulb housing and fell off.

Sorry to hear that. I'm guessing you bought it from the dealer? It's only $87 through parts.com

CLK63 Black Series
The lens on my 04 CLK500 used to fall off all the time... I think I had 4 replaced by the dealer for free. Never lost one on my black series knock on wood.

It seems like an easy fix, just add a rigid plastic piece to the inside and rim made with a plastic that won't crack. The way it is designed now the brittle clear red plastic is subjected to constant tension and strong vibration from the trunk closing. There is zero doubt that this is a design failure but possibly exasperated by poor materials - the brittle plastic that makes up the lens.

I had a problem with my trunk lock so I had to slam the trunk for it to close. I replaced 2 lights during that time. Since I changed the lock I barely have to put force on the trunk for it to close. Needless to say I haven't had to replace the light since.

Yeah, bought it from dealer. The plastic does appear to be slightly different, and it comes with the adhesive which sits between plastic and trunk. So lets hope for no further issues.

Luckily its a super simple install, took less than 15 minutes.

I know its been over a year since the last reply on this. The the red lens came off of my 2007 CLK recently... and the actual light fell inside the body. It looks like I'm going to have to open up the inside of the trunk in order to clip the light back up there.
Any new places to get these parts? It looks like the price of $91.20 on parts.com is for the whole light assembly, is that correct? Seems like it would be alot for just a red piece of plastic.
