Key replacement cost.

I'm making this thread as a reference, as I noticed it was not an easy answer for me to find on here.

I lost my only key to my W209 CLK. I was told by the Techs that did not need the car to make a key. ParkPlace MB refused to make a key even after showing proof of owner ship. They said I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR AT THE DEALER. So you will have to pay for a tow.

The cost was $320.42 in TX I'm sure your rates will very and you might get a discount. Seeing they had my car ( after the tow) They kinda had me by the ***** on the price. I'm sure you can shop around, but this was the closest dealer and the cheapest place to tow.

I was quoted between $50 and $200 for a tow. The guy who wanted $50 got stuck in my parking garage and then was all pissed off about it and refused to tow it. They hire a company to tow cars from my Condos so I gave them a call and they did it for $80.

My total cost was $400.42

Hope this helps any one that is searching for this.

How did you do that? Can you link me to the info. Maybe 05 is different than 04? I would not think so! I'd love to buy a back up, as long as I'm sure it would work.

Oh also my iphone was stolen w/ my jacket That's another $400

I don't know if it's different for an 05. The members name I bought it from was "Mister Brenton". I had to fax him a copy of my registration to verify the info. He was able to do it for $145 with shipping. I don't know if he could still get parts though. Worth a shot. GL

That blows about the iphone! I have a 3gs and I would go nuts if I lost it.

no, mod Mister Brenton is no longer able to get replacement Smartkeys
through his contact. MB put the squeeze on dealers a while back insisting
that they adhere to the price/security restrictions.

i'm intrigued that a dealer is insisting that the car be brought in. sounds
like they're being poo-poo heads. other dealers will order the key with
proper ID and paperwork; their MB system should show update on owner-
ship to confirm this.

even more ironic is that the Smartkey programming facility is in TX.

(before MB put the kabosh on price, I was able to get an Internet replacement for $60)

Our dealer will order keys without the vehicle being present...but you need to have all your paperwork and fill out a new sheet.

TRP-Theft Relevant Part, everything from keys, EIS', ME's, airbags, the list goes on. MB put a big crackdown on ordering any TRP part. If the car is in for service, and I as a tech need to put the part in, I have to sign a paper saying I received the part.

I paid around $200 for the spare key (no keyless). Looks much better than the old one. I just called the service department, give them my vin. Then I picked it up two days after. I brought my registration and a driver license. It was very easy order.

I believe it's 18 keys, after which you must have the car "re-keyed" for BIG $$$ (they say the car is "keyed out" after 18). I know because I buy my cars at an auto auction, with a broker. My first Benz came with 4 keys, one of which was the "valet key", no blade. My current CLK only came with one :-(
Once, he bought an ML for a guy who was such a cheapskate that week after week the ML's were too much money. The one that was finally in the guy's pricerange had only one key, and when he tried to get another he was told it was keyed out. Why would a 3 year old ML have gone through 17 keys you ask? Former loaner car!

Dude, are you saying your key was in the jacket with your phone? Do you think the guy with your iPhone can figure out your address, and therefore find your car?

i'll be needing one too.

anyone know if the price is more for keyless go keys?

i just called two different dealers and one quoted $475 and another quoted $275. that's quite a big difference considering the dealerships are less than 30 miles from each other.

If you search this forum you'll find my recent link to the key issue.

You have to eventually take the car in with your new key - to do it properly a dealer will then utilize both your keys to electronically program the car to only recognize those keys. Ended costing me about 500 bucks for one additional key - but get this - my new key (from Germany) is a nice chrome sided model (just like the one they use for the mcClaren without the Mclaren shaded writing on the side chrome). (ok ok just like the one they use for remote hatch released R-classes and many others). Like the key - new style.

The only difference I'm aware of between '04 and '05 is the internal bus - different cabling/different design going forward.

most of you know I LOVE reviving old threads (this one is especially fun, as it includes the phrase "poo-poo heads" in one of the posts). My new CLK w/ Keyless Go came with only one key and, while I could live with just one, a used car dealer I know gave me a contact at a small MB dealer: $302.50 for the key (that's $280 for the smartkey and 22.50 for the blade). The parts manager even offered me the used car guy's discount (I think he buys a lot of keys and other MB parts): $242.50

Does that sound like a good deal?

NO LONGER ACTIVE
I think KeylessGo is slightly more costly, but a good deep-discount for a non-KG key is under $200. I'd say $242 for KG is reasonable.
