Wow... why aren't we all in diesels. Your understanding of torque through the driveline and its relation to horsepower is... well, it is sad.

The CLK550 is not even competition for a stock M3 but some of you actually desperately want to believe it, too funny.

This guy seems to think the M3 is only fast up top in the revs... yet that is where races from a roll take place... oh my, MB fanboys, please pick a stance as you guys are confusing yourselves. It is fun to watch though.
All I have to say is, in Physics: Power = Torque X RPM X Constant. M3's low Torque and High Power requires the M3 to have Higher RPM to reach closer to the Maximum Power. CLK 550's High torque allows the car to reach close to the Maximum Power at lower RPM's. Comparing horsepowers of 380-ish to 420ish. The power is just 40 hp difference. It is possible for the CLK 550 to win a drag.

No, it isn't.

Because horsepower is torque x rpm / 5252. So even if the M3 has less torque, due to the rev multiplication, its flat torque curve, and its gearing it has more torque at the axle and more HP under the curve.

It is not possible, because it can't happen. You just do not understand how much faster the M3 is which is why this is so ridiculous.

Look man, here is a DCT decimating a C63 which is much faster than the CLK550 and the M3's strength is the roll, just like the M5:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnRgTM4qvKM

Here are some M3 slips, take a look at the trap speeds and ET's the M3 is putting up, the CLK is not even in the same ballpark: http://www.dragtimes.com/BMW--M3-Drag-Racing.html

Please, read up, watch, educate yourself, very depressing to see so many poorly educated enthusiasts.

SLK280(Gone), C63, CLK550
When the weather gets warmer I will bring the CLK550 to the drag strip and try this race myself.

I have raced a M3 DCT before in the C63 and it was pretty even all the way to 60 and then the C63 pulls away very slowly.

I just picked up a CLK550 and personally I did not expect it to be so 'torquey', I was pleasantly surprised Althought the ride is much more comfortable and it is not as violent as the C.

CLK550 is less power than C63, but it is also about 300lbs lighter than C63.
So if C63 takes the M3, why cant the CLK550 take the M3?

As i said CLK 550 the perfect sleeper. When you drive fast in CLK you cant tell how fast the car is. Its not that loud or as you said violent as other sports cars are. It feels luxurious even when you race.
Only time you know you are fast is when you beating other "Fast" Cars.
MBs best kept secret!

agree.... clk550 is a fast car but I'm interested to see m3 vs. clk550. On the paper, clk550 is inferior. Videos needed here hahaha

http://www.youtube.com/user/DLSJ5#p/u/6/dx9dZrmdxOA

Please posts vids next time you race, I'm having trouble believing that your car is as fast as a Clk63BS

im confused..so you're saying the 550 is not as fast as the BS or are you saying the m3 is as fast as a BS? or do you believe the m3 is as fast as an m6?

I thought this whole thread was talking about stock vs. stock? I think you're being too modest on the "lightly modded m3" part.

AMG
Race an M3 from 100mph-155mph and you will understand why Torque is King... At higher speeds displacement makes a huge difference in the real world (where as it may not seem like it on paper)

M3 is quick b/c it has absurd gearing & very quick shifting transmission. At lower speeds its very quick but get up to much higher speeds where aerodynamic forces are much more extreme and it doesn't really stand a chance with a car that has almost 100ftlbs more of torque.

Again... from a roll easily possible since the CLK550 has more power than the outgoing CLK55 AMG and even those are almost even with the new M3s in the real world.

Stop being such an M3 worshiper... they aren't that great (I know I used to be a diehard one myself until I realized AMG is better)

As Jeremy Clarkson would say, "M3 drivers have no friends."

Not that I'm ever going to see 133, but is it possible to delimit the 550?

hit 133 many times, very upsetting to accelerate so strong and then just a stop

there are some companies that remove the limiter in your ECU but i am too scared to loose my warranty.
plus the idea of going faster will make me try higher speeds.....
not a good idea

^hah? clk550 are limited to 133mph. I've tried my clk320 and tried up to 145mph with no problem. I thought every benz has 155mph limiter, not 133...

Well, I'm happy to report that my CLK550 actually has a limiter of 134mph . I've only hit it once, but I agree that it was very disappointing to accelerate so hard up to the limiter only to feel the power get cut off.

A full exhaust, pulley, and a tune through the obd? That's not light? Pretty sure it is...I posted the video to show you guys that if a lightly modded M can beat a clk63 bs, then the clk550 should hang with the black series

By the way, I looked at a C63AMG before I bought my M, I didn't want 4doors. I also looked at a CLK550 when I bought my IS350 but I bought the Lexus because I knew I would get another car in a year..I respect MBs but I had to post in this thread because I don't believe for a second that a clk550 beat an m3. Now on the other hand, if it was a C63...I would probably believe it.

I'm no M worshipper by any means, I also love AMGs..
