Clicking sound on the rear...Plz HELP
Hi guys,
I searched about this issue but couldn't find it.
I had CLK 320 convertible with stock 16 wheels (No sports package)
I just changed to 19x8.5/19x9.5 with Toyos 235/35 19 on the front and
265/30 19 on the rear.
After the installation at Firestone, the mechanic said there's a weird sound
coming from the rear but he couldn't locate it. There's no rubbing or anything
When I go back and forth and when it rotates, I hear metal scratching sound
like, 'click, click'
I checked everything. I used shorter lug bolts than the stock one. Didn't see
any rubbing on the rear. Checked on brakes too. Mechanic said it's either
wheel bearing problem or computer problem.
I really don't understand. With those stock wheels, I didn't hear anything. But
suddenly, I just changed to bigger wheels and tires, and I hear this annoying
sound
Dealer will solve everything but it's too far away from here. I don't want to
drive this on the highway.
Then what stores I need to go? Body shop? Tire shop?
These Firestone guys are definately helpless.
Sorry for my poor English...I tried to describe well but it's too hard
Please help me!

it's the longer bolts rubbing against the emergency brake.
remove the wheel, stick the bolt in and see how far it goes through. it should come out about 1". any more than that and it'll hit the emergency brake.

Thanks for the quick reply. It really makes sense. But mechanic said those new bolts are shorter than the stock one, so there's no way bolts are hitting something. Well, I'll double check tomorrow.
If it's hitting the emergency brake, is it ok to drive for now? I'm just too scared to drive. I don't want to break anything.

This clicking sound only happens when you drive? If you drive faster, does it click faster?

faster.
They removed the rear wheels and pushed the pedal. Then I didn't hear
anything. So it must be something with wheels and bolts.
I'll check it tomorrow. I hope nothing happens when I drive..
Thx!

The minimum mercedes recommends to tighten the bolt is 6 full turns I believe. Anything more than that is not necessary. Sand down the bolts until you can get 6 full turns before you feel the torque.

I drove again in this morning and came home.
I was surprised that I could not hear any noises!!
What a surprise! Really quiet as usual
I will drive more later and if I hear again, I'll go and fix it.
Thanks a lot guys!
By the way, I really like this wheel. I must do something with rotors and
calipers. I didn't notice before but they look so ugly now!
