Exhaust Sounclips

I finally had the chance to pick up the car. Right now I have no muffler, resonator, or 2nd cats. I could tell you there is definitely a drone. It sounds good on the sound clips but gets annoying after a while. I should be making the trip to the exhaust shop soon and see about some mufflers.

If I wasn't going with the whole dual exhaust, I could see this setup working with just a resonator/muffler in the middle of the car. It would sound just right. Here is one clip from inside and another from outside.

Nope, no tips. I have no tips or a muffler. I had to take it off cuz it didn't fit after switching the spare wheel well. I will probably go with 2 Magnaflow mufflers, and quad tips. I wasn't really pushing the pedal too much, I live in a quite neighborhood.

eh, not a big fan of the sound. i plan on doing a similar setup, but with a magnaflow x-pipe, hopefully it comes out sounding better on mine because of the v8

Yea, I know, it's too loud for me. With the Mag mufflers and maybe a Mag resonator it should sound better. I'm only halfway done.

Putting the x-pipe there doesnt necessary mean the volume will go down...u will need the muffler or resonator.

I think yours would be louder than mine because of the V8. Why not just go with a Magnaflow resonator?

I would imagine the Mag res isn't as restrictive as the OEM

thats loud for a 320 bro.it should sound nice once you put the cans on.i hear you about the droning though.gets old really fast.i had harry take my secondary cats out last week.tomorrow we are getting rid of the resonator.i'll see how it comes out.i'll try and make some exhaust clips this weekend.i saw ur car at his shop last week bro.it looks great.

I am still confused on the role a resonator plays?!!
Is it there to quite the car down only? Does it have anything to do with how throaty the sound becomes?
Reason i am asking is i might get one for myself and see what it will be like.
If i do though it will be an exotic speed one

Nothing in the market sounds like them. They just don't make an exhaust for Mercedes yet....

I think the purpose of a resonator is to tone down the exhaust and to make it quieter. This, of course, also results is taking away some of the 'throatiness' of an exhaust, which is why the exhaust note gets 'throatier' when you remove resonators.

i want my exhaust to sound as close as i can to this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWJfXaQpjmI
Which is why i dont think im going to put the resonators back in. im just going to do what that slk55 did, magnaflow x-pipe with no muffler

Thanks for clearing that out. SO no matter what resonator you buy it wont make the sound get throatier or louder just quiet it down.

And that SLk is LOUD damn

that's not true, i was just describing the role of oem resonators. just like the role of an oem muffler is to quiet down the car, the role of an aftermarket muffler could be to enhance the sound.

it's hard to tell with exhaust sounds.everyone has a different preference as to what sounds good.its all trail and error as i see it.every engine sounds different

I kinda agreed with fastdonzi.....lets say we have same car and same model but the sounds will be different eventhough we have the same setup.

Yea I agree. It's really hard to gauge an exhaust by the video. The only real way is trial and error. In person the drone in ny car is unbearable, but in the bids it doesn't sound that bad.

A resonator takes a lot of the higher pitched 'pings' out and smooths the sound - it absolutely lowers the volume somewhat but also 'refines' the sound. Also, the placement of the resonator will actually make a difference in the sound - the closer to the motor the 'throatier/mellower' (making some good words up here) the sound. Magnaflow mufflers are essentially resonators in the sense that they have no baffles, just a perforated inner tube surrounded by sound deadening material. Other resonators like the 'glass pack' designs have dimple baffles in them that distrub the airflow (and the packing material burns out, Mag wont due to the stainless mesh) - Magnaflow does not and therefore wont restrict airflow/movement.

On almost every car I have owned for the past 10 years I had a Magnaflow round muffler (just because there wasn't room for an oval) in place of the factory resonator, then another Magnaflow muffler or two (depending on single or dual exhaust) in the back. The system remains straight through/high flow but has excellent sound control.

*edit* An X-pipe also helps refine the sound and balances the pressures of the two banks, aiding in scavenging - every true dual set up should have an x-pipe.

I guess I might have to put an X-pipe. Can't wait to get this done already. Here are some pics I snapped this morning.
