Opinions needed about Supercharger situation

Hi All,

I recently bought a used Kleemann Supercharger and planned to install it in December, but there is a problem. I spoke to Cory@Kleemann and he informed me that the the Kit is not C.A.R.B certified for a CLK500 (because it's a ULEV) and that is a big deal since I still live in California. So here are my choices now:

1. Install the kit and try to find some "friendly" smog testing stations (No guarantee I would find one and it's a hassle).
2. Sell the kit to somebody who does not live in a Smog strict state.

What do you think?

Wow, quite a predicament. lol. Make a list of the pros and cons. Does having that speed outweigh the hassle you're going to go through? It would be freaking sweet though.

How much did it run you, if you don't mind me asking?

I really want to install it, but my gut says it's probably more trouble than it's worth. I bought it for $6250, but I think I'll sell it for less so I can sell it quickly.

Ha, Ha! That was the idea! Too many M3's in Southern Cali. I haven't given up on the idea....

In California, every 4 years the car has to go through a Smog sniffer test and inspection. If the technician suspects the Supercharger is not OEM, you will need a C.A.R.B EO# to verify that the cars emissions is intact. Since the the W209 is a ULEV, it can never be certified. If you don't live in California or a state that doesn't enforce the C.A.R.B rule, you're okay.

So I can sell everything or install the Supercharger and take it to friendly Smog stations. I'm in no hurry to sell it, so I'll sit on the kit and think about what I'm going to do.

I think the law now changed to 5 yrs on the 1st inspection/test on new car models. So all the 2005 models should already or get the 1st inspetion by year end. After the 1st inspection, the next inspection is every 2 years. And btw, our registration renew fee is is still at double rate compared to 3 years ago.

I wouldn't risk it.

I know it must be a tough deal.

Just the hassles of finding that "smog friendly shop" and the hopes they won't throw you under the bus with some crazy off the wall price to do the inspection due to the risk, and word of mouth they did it. That's great side $$$$ for them.

But like you said, you're in no hurry. Things may become clearer after some time passes to think it through. Best of luck too you. Mike

Thanks Mike, I've set up a feeler for the kit on the classifieds here:
https://mbworld.org/forums/engine-pe...-m113-v8s.html

If it doesn't sell by around December, I think I'm going to go ahead and install it.

Ha, Ha! I haven't given up on the idea, but we'll see what happens. My plan was to have Cory @ Kleemann install it in Colorado, in the USA, he has the most experience installing these kits. BTW, you have PM

Go to the next cars and coffee advice and get the names of some mod-friendly shops. If you only need a check every 4 years, I say go for it.

If you can get it done and feel okay about having the car passed, that's great pal! If not, if something changes and you decide to abandon the project, PM me. Thx.

It'll be sweet! I'll be sure to create a thread when it's done.

I don't think it will fit, its for the M113 V8s. As a matter of fact, I don't think there is a SC option for the 550 engines.

Man Brian, you won't believe how close I was to selling it. But I received tons of PMs supporting the project and a few telling where the "friendly" smog shops are (apparently there are tons in LA). Once again the MBworld community comes through!

Nope, there is a different kit for the 550's;

http://shop.kleemann.dk/shop/500-550-k3-kit-289p.html

Here's the funny thing, the total package (s/c, headers, cams, etc) on a 500 punts out 500 ponies, the kit for the 550 puts out 460hp...

To those who own 500's and want to Kleemannize (as I am planning) - I salute you!
