CLK55 Custom Quad exhaust
Hey guys,
i know that this thread should be probably posted in the AMG section, but that forum seems to be a bit dead to me.
I am planning to do a custom Quad exhaust with AMG tips for my CLK55. My idea is: Muffler and 2ndary cats delete with x-pipe in the place of 2ndary cats and then just straight pipes to the tips.
With this, i am concered about the drone. I know its gonna be really loud, but what do you guys think, should i use an universal muffler instead of the x-pipe to minimize drone? Something like magnaflow dual inlet and dual outlet universal muffler?
I would appreciate your advice guys. Any idea, what gains should i expect with this exhaust mod, maybe 10whp and 15TQ ?
Thanks

not going to get much of a power upgrade buddy. for the sound i'd stick with a simple magnaflow muffler, the x-pipe won't do any minimizing on noise. i just ran cat back resonator delete magnaflow mufflers all 3" pipe. factory measurement is about 2.75"

That setup would be way too loud. If you're concerned about droning on a 55, I don't think you should get rid of the muffler. Magnaflow is definitely a good option. I would find a good exhaust shop that is willing to work with you. Try taking off the muffler and drive around a bit. Like Chris said, the x-pipe isn't going to do much in minimizing drone. Don't expect big gains either.

I'm going to delete the 2nd cats, remove the factory resonator and replace it with a Magnaflow (dual in, single 3" out) then split (after the axle) to dual 2 or 2 1/4 pipes to the tips. In doing so, I will have a system that should flow very close to a true dual set-up but save the weight of a second muffler. My future plan may include forced induction so I am planning the exhaust system with that in mind.

So deleting 2nd cats won't give us any gains? I have been reading a lot about this here, and as AMS said high flow secondary cats can make on N/A 55 engine 10HP/12TQ, so i suggest, deleting them completely can provide even some more gains.

Deleting the 2nd cats will absolutely gain a few hp as it's removing another restriction in the system. Remember, horsepower is the byproduct of efficiency. The reason why I am using a dual in single out is because off the primary cats there are dual runs of pipe, I'm going to have them go into the resonator and exit through a big 3" pipe to act as an x-pipe (so yes, you're right on the money in regards to balancing out the two banks) and to make it easier to pass the axle in one spot (my aftermarket sway bar is single bumped for one pipe). I haven't measured it out but it's going to be a rather short singe pipe run, I've done this on other cars and it worked out very, very well. Great flow, ease of routing and weight reduction. Wow, 3 for 3

+1 on pics...lol...
But if you need specific threads look at dyno's quad exhaust thread, m-Benz's brand-new pipes thread or klinh's exhaust thread...
If you need exact links let me know but I'm on my phone right now...lol...
Dyno's would be your best bet and what you're looking for...he has a whole thread about it and a photo album...
Man I do my searching and browsing on these forums...lol!...

Thanks a lot guys for your help! I am currently consulting all the options with some exhaust shops, i will inform you for sure about some news.
I am currently thinking about building the whole exhaust, starting directly with the header flange.
About the pics, i will surely post some, but my harddrive was burnt, so currently, i really dont have any.
Since the weather is terrible here, keeping the car clean is almost impossible. Its just a stock black on black CLK55 with stock 18" winter setup, powdercoated black. I will take some pics, when the weather gets better.
