Light under rear view mirror??

Dead center on the bottom of the inside rear view mirror is a little tiny round yellow light. The owner's manual does not seem to show it. What is it for?

I guess it is for lighting up the shifter area. It stays on for a really long time after engine is shut off. I found that out one night when I was waiting for my kid's basketball to let out. I sat in my car in the parking lot playing with my iPhone with the engine off. It must have been more than half hour.

I believe it's made to read the map...
I just wish there was a DIY to change the bulb to a different color

If it is for reading maps, then it is lousy or maybe I am getting too old and my eye sights are gone . Can't see $h!t with it.

I thought it was more for like ambient cabin lighting like the ones on the floor on W211

I am sure its there just so you can slightly see at night without turning on the other interior lights.

None. Sold the last one and never looking back.
My light isn't working. Is there a link to the DIY fix? Thanks!

I thought that yellow bulb was for ambiance only. A soft welcoming glow.

I know this is an old thread but I have wondered what that light is too.

Hard to believe, but there was civilization before Siri and Alexa, when folks relied upon pieces of paper on which printed hieroglyphics sometimes guided them to their destinations. Unlike clay tablets that could be safely illuminated with open flame torches, paper was combustible. Automobile engineers recogized this hazard and incorporated lights into rear view mirrors so that these primitive GPS precedents could be safely illuminated during periods of darkness. While now widely regarded as obsolete, these lights continue to provide novel amusement to automobile enthusiasts and historians, while occasionally aiding drivers when signing speeding tickets.

Sorry - I shouldn't mix Margaritas and forum posting.
