Its a rear differential diffuser. It aids in cooling the rear differential. Most AMG's have these.

Correct on the purpose but the correct term is 'heat-sink'. Work the same as on anything else with one, like an amp. Increases the surface area to allow greater cooling.

YUP, that metal soaks heat up very easily and disperses it via the fins into the air. The same principle is utilized on a lot of electronics like amps and those resistors needed for LED's because they get hot. A lot of high end under hood components like cooling system fittings, fuel pumps/lines/fittings and steering systems for big lifted jeeps and such do the same thing.

I have the part number for the actual AMG one, but to install it you also need to change the diff cover (got the part number for that too).

I've been doing some research on it for a few weeks beacuse I was going to try and get it to work on my diff after I install the Qauife LSD for the track. Just need to compare the diff housing on the C63 and the CLK500/55's (apparently the diff on the V8's is different than the smaller engine packages but I haven't 100% confirmed this).

I'll let everyone know what I find out. I sure hope I can get it to work (without too many modifications) because track racing in 120-140*F heat is going to have several components in the car red hot - especially the LSD.

Unless you're doing stuff like Kev is talking about which involves giving your car He** for extended amounts of time, no its not needed. The occasional blip of the throttle once or twice a day would not heat the diff. enough to warrant installing something like this. I'm not saying it wouldn't be beneficial to have anyways, but its not necessary.

keV, you know if they offer an LSD for the 320? I'm think this might be a good idea after my motor swap.

Hmmm, not sure but I'll check for you bro. You do have an advantage with that 3.2 over the V8's - traction! You're going to make some awesome mid-top end HP but it's going to be quite reasonable on the bottom end. If there is a LSD for the 320 you're going to have more traction than you'll every need

Okay, there is a Quaife LSD offered for the W230 C32 but that diff was the same as the W210 E55 (V8 car diff) - it was not the same as the non V8 diff. For your 320, I can't find anything mate, sorry.

I think there's a way to retro fit these fins on our cars. I remember some guys in the C55/C32 ///AMG forums doing a similar upgrade and it should be applicable to us as well.
