Question Radio - Speaker Issues - no NAV - tried the fuse reset

Have an 03 CLK320 sport pkg owned since new. Been an amazingly reliable car and rarely gets driven now. Does not have NAV, just the standard Bose system.

About a year ago the speaker in the drivers door began to get staticy at times and finally went out. Then about a month ago all the speakers except what sounds like a sub (all bass) stopped working.

I've read a bunch of posts on here regarding pulling fuses to reset the system etc and tried this but the problem remains. No other threads found on my issue.

I'm wondering if others have experienced this issue and if it was perhaps the radio and or amp?

Trying to figure out the next step for trouble shooting and if I need to buy a new radio/amp.

Any help appreciated.

P.S. The only issues I've ever had with this car is the rear trunk tail-light breaking almost every year and the cup-holder breaking twice. The parking brake is now getting fidgety but probably just needs tightening..

Have the car in the dealer today for a couple other issues. I told them to trouble shoot the sound problem and they say it is the amplifier. Cost to repair $1300. I said no. They are asking $900 for the amp the rest is labor.

Will look for an amp on ebay etc. Any replaced their amplifier?

go to any Audio specialist and get a proper amplifier instead.
This is a good opportunity!

Just to add an update. Bought an amp on ebay for $150, have a shop next door that installed it for the cost of lunch. So the $1300 estimate from Mercedes turned into probably a $180 fix.

I watched the swap and it was pretty easy.

Thanks for sharing the info here. This will make for another good "search" function find for many.

BTW, what brand of amp did you end up buying? Might be good to know from a compatibility standpoint.

I have a 2003 CLK with the sport package and Bose system. The amp part# was BOSE AMP 209 820 02 89

There were a few on ebay ranging from $800 to $150 with a few in the $300 to $500 range. They amp I got was a pull so it was a risk, but seller guaranteed return if it didn't work.

We did notice about 3 various type of wires and connectors back there that were connected to nothing. Probably for options like parking sensors and other sounds systems available with this model.

Further detail: This amp problem started with the drivers door speaker crackling and slowly all the the speakers went out. We initially thought it was just one speaker going bad, but turns out these amp can "slowly" fail.

The used amp I bought on ebay seems to have failed. Looks like I may be replacing it again. Perhaps its just cheaper to go after market with a new stereo all together...

amplifier

Unfortunately, this amp. goes out quite frequently and in the same boat. I am contacting Bose technical tomorrow to see if they have any new in stock....had some other friends go to them directly and save about 80% of what the dealer charges. Good luck

Bose Direct!!!!

I got some great news for ya. tired of being asked to pay $1200 from mercedes to buy a Bose part...like the amplifier you need???

How about $350, brand new from bose, with a 1 yr warranty!! I not only found the direct number for the right department, but some one to personally take care of us and her Direct Phone #. That is half the cheapest price you found and from the best place...the manufacturer. If in Seattle...I'll take a beer please:-)

800.231.2673 - Bose Automotive Division
508.766.9522 - Patty...everyone be nice to her!!!

Take care - Jim
