Both make good products. Benz goes 0W-40 as a global oil. If you are changing between summer & winter your viscosity choices are good. Make sure that the oil you use has a MB 229.5 approval.

2009 CLK350
Ive been reading this thread! its amazing for the money you would have to worry about this. I keep on reading the engines that are affected by this issue are between certain numbers. I might be buying a 2009 CLK350 AMG package 36k miles on it for $21000 tomorrow. I dont have the vin # or engine # but would anyone know if the 2009's were effected by this engine issue!!! or any other issues that im not aware of!

Hi,
Now I have to change the balancer shaft sprocket as the engine start become noisy. how I know that the spare part is not weak or bad manufacture the same as the damaged one??
Please advise if there is a way to avoid this from happening again.

I have a 2006 R350 with 118,000 miles and took it in to the dealer for recall work to be done replacing the cam shaft adjuster magentas and wire harness. I had a p0016 code and they said recall work did not fix it. It is the balance shaft gear. I was prepared for them to tell me $6k to fix, but instead the service advisor said "We are fixing it under warranty so give us 3 more days." I was floored. Certainly Mercedes seems to be slowly changing their stance on fixing this defect.

Does anyone mind looking up a couple of VIN numbers for me and let me know if I am within the affected range. I am new on this forum and I am hoping to make a MB purchase within the next two weeks.

Hello,
Have noticed a consistent high pitched sound coming from the passenger side of the engine bay. MB shop thinks the cams may be causing the issue...rubbing/scrapping etc. Before I let him lose on the car can someone confirm if my car is on the naughty list?? I now only have 7500 miles on it so I think that since this was a factor F-up it could be the reason.

Balance Shaft Repair Parts List
My wife's '06 CLK 350(108K miles) has begun throwing P0016 & occasionally P0017 with irritating regularity. I may get a borescope to confirm this but I believe the writing is on the wall.
I am not going to bother with having Mercedes do the work as what will come out of my pocket will likely meet or exceed what the car is worth even if I manage to get them to do their partial compensation.
I will be doing the work myself and am hoping to find out if there is a recommended parts list or a "kit" for this little project. I will be going thru Parts.com to purchase what is needed.
TIA for any help with this.

Bill... I'd still check with the dealer just to see what they might do.. Note there is a class action lawsuit that went though.. Print out the lawsuit and bring it with you From what I read it looks like the car is covered to 125k miles you might be able to get reimbursed for 70%. Anyway, if you want to do it yourself I saw a great video direct from Mercedes on youtube showing the entire process.

Got my reply & to add insult to injury one of the actuators on the intake manifold is now throwing a code. If we keep the car I will do the balance shaft & actuator repair myself. Their estimate exceeds the current value of the car:
Hey Bill once again thank you for your patience,
In regards to the intake manifold it sounds like it is the actuator that is broken/ faulty according to the techs shop notes.
As for the balance shaft, with the age of your CLK and the mileage falling under the LI03.30-P-050027, MBUSA is willing to provide a 37.5% discount to the repairs. Blow are the prices and a screenshot of the document. Attached is the document in its entirety. Let me know if you have any questions.
Intake Manifold $1,796.00 installed plus tax
Balance shaft (adjusted with 37.5% off) $4,628.13 installed plus tax for the parts.

Hello, new here as I am shopping for a Mercedes CLK. I was looking at the SL but two more seats and no hydraulic suspension makes this a better option. I don't have a VIN but are the 07,08 550 engines in the clear? There was one post that said it was 06 engines.

Vin check please for balancer shaft issues

With vin WDBTK75G44T011172 can anyone tell me if this engine falls into the balancer shaft issues?
Again thank you.
