Loud ticking sound
I have this rather loud ticking sound more pronounced in the mornings when engine is still cold. Its definitely quite audible over the engine noise.
Here is the general area its coming from. I think its that part the arrow point to but could be anything.

EECS Purge valve. Common problem. Replacement is the only fix. You will find plenty written about the subject on the W203 forum.

thank you so much, people like you make this site so great. Any idea if this is a serious problem? Can it fail and what would be the result?

Not a serious problem. Just a damn irritating one. They seldom fail, Some of them just get noisy. If they do fail they cause a slight fuel trim problem sucking fumes in an uncontrolled fashion from the gas tank/filler captive breather system or sometimes a hard slug of fuel if you over fill the tank & saturate the carbon filter/canister.
A replacement will fix, generally for a very long time. Also - SA built cars have a rubber gasket fitted between the bracket & the mounting point to help damp noise.
Once the purge valve becomes noisy it remains noisy & can't be repaired.
