Thank you so much. I realise every car/model no matter what you buy could have potential problems. I have done some research ( I'm in Australia)
One thing I didn't ask the dealer, is if the car has been recalled. Should I do this??? or perhaps I should ring MB and ask them.

Please can you check out vin Wdbwk56f55f032345---it is the VIN of a slk 350 I am ready to purchase. have a feeling it is in the potential problem range. about what % of those cars have failures? if a car was very well maintained and has 80,000 miles with no current problems, is it still possible it can fail at any time without much warning?

I can tell you with 100% certainty that a MY2005 CLK350 will have an engine "in the range". In fact, the SLK was the first model to get the M272. All M272 and M273 engine through MY2006 are in the range. It's only MY2007 that may or may not be as that was when the problem part was corrected.

If that's correct, then it has M272 engine #603288, which is beyond the balance shaft problem range.
