Coilovers - rough ride on stock rims
Hi all,
I recently had D2 Racing Coilovers and H&R Front and Rear Sways put on my 2007 CLK550. I lowered the car a pretty good amount, and took it out on the track the other day where the coilovers were FANTASTIC on full stiff.
Not a surprise, but the ride is pretty rough. I'm probably going to end up raising it, but one question I had was since i'm on the stock 17" AMG rims, am i dropping the suspension alot more than if i move up to 19" wheels? I'm assuming going up to 19s might allow me to raise the car about a half inch to three quarters of an inch, improving the ride quality without impacting the look.
thoughts?
thanks!

I don't think rasing the car by using bigger wheels will make a difference. Your suspension in releation to where the wheel mounts all remains the same. Plus you will have lower profile tires, so I think your ride will be even worse.

19" wheels will probably make your ride worse. Also probably could have stayed away from racing coilovers if you were concerned about ride quality and perhaps went for BC or others with a lower spring rate (guessing the D2 is high). Finally, try setting your rebound and compression to a soft setting and raising the car a bit. I would not raise it if you are going with 19" wheels though as you may inadvertently raise it by using a larger overall tire diameter anyways. Time to tinker with it, that's the advantage!

Overall tire diameter stays static. Sidewall does not. Ride will be much worse.
Examples for rear - Virtually the same diameter
245/40/17
265/30/19

Yes but not always- people often change it inadvertently by going to larger wheels. "Virtually the same" can have a big impact on looks, even 1/2" larger. Especially since bigger wheels with thin sidewalls can look "off" without a complementary drop in ride height.

did you have to run spacers with those coilovers. im still on a search for coilovers that do not need wheel spacers. i think i might go with the H&R coilovers but, still waiting on pulling the trigger.

I can't take the stiff ride with my KW coilover neither even with both setting @ soft. I removed it within 2 weeks and went with Eibach springs and Bilstein sport struts/shocks. Love the ride after the changed.
