Best milage you have gotten in your CLK550
Just finished a 125 mile highway trip. Averaged right at 70 MPH. I was shocked that I got an even 29MPH. SOme uphill and some downhill. Combo of the cruise control and manual.
What is your best?

Well, I can sure find out when I fill the tank after my next trip. I was very careful about using the throttle.
26 seems pretty easy in this car. on the one screen.
Overall the mileage on the other screen is 19.8- for the last 700 miles.
35% city- rest Hwy

The government mileage numbers are always so frustrating.
I have to rent cars regularly, and I am always amazed that the 4 cylinder cars that have these astonishing MPG numbers on paper, get the same mileage as my cars in reality.
In real world use, a good engine can actually be more efficient sometimes. You mention some uphill, a V8 will be easier on the gas uphill than a 4 cylinder struggling.
Your numbers are impressive though. My SLK350 has gotten 26-27mpg max on highway. Most of the time I get max 19mpg on the entire tank (with 50/50 driving).

You must have an average speed over those 700 miles of about 30mph, right? I don't average 20 mph on a tank usually - more like 17. Which is about 14mpg. Good to have a big V8 to average 17mph, huh?

My CLK550 gets better MPG than the C240 (thought the C240 has always been accused of poor MPG, even from when it was introduced). As long as I don't "enjoy the accelerator" too much, and don't get stuck in too much bad traffic, I get at least 18mpg in town in the CLK. I get over 20mpg running 90mph down the highway. And I have found that I get slightly better MPG with the top down, windows up and rear windscreen in place. My best was about 26mpg running about 8i0mph on the highway, with some hills.

Why on earth would I want to slow down?!? Seriously, I suppose it's possible. I know my ML wouldn't do much better than 20mpg at 80mph+, but at 50-55mph, I could get 23-24mpg.

'05 CLK500 gets 14 MPG in LA
Got best of 27 MPG coming down CA 1 from Big Sur. Included hills, curves, etc. SO I believe 29 may be possible doing 70 MPH in straight road like 5 North of Grapevine

I get 19 - 20 in suburban driving; 14 - 15 in town traffic; on a road trip from SF Bay area to Palm Springs I got 25.5 down, 26 back. That's the best I've ever done.

At a nice, steady highway cruise at 65 mph, our CLK550 easily achieves mid-upper 20s. 25~26 MPG seems about right. What I don't understand is how/why the EPA gave it such an underestimating 21 rating??
Around town/suburbs it averages about 18.5, with the wife doing most of the driving.

The EPA fuel economy test may be good for comparing against other cars, but it has very little to do with "actual driving". The EPA's standardized test requires that a car be placed on a dyno and a "simulated" drive takes place. The amount of fuel used is determined by examining the hydrocarbons in the exhaust. There are several things wrong with this. For example, according to the EPA website, a CLK430 coupe gets the same mileage as a cabriolet. In fact, according to the EPA website, a CLK430 coupe gets the same mileage as a CLK55 cabriolet. Could that be because aero figures don't matter on a dyno?

Per the EPA, my CLK430 allegedly gets 22 MPG. However, when I take road trips I somehow get dramatically better fuel economy. I've checked the dash numbers against gallons added, and they match what I see in the dash display. That 1000 mile trip shown below included stops for gas, driving in town, and cold starts after spending the night.

LOL! Sounds like my wife's Jeep GC. Whenever she drives it around town, the TC shows 13mpg or so. When I drive it around town, it's at least 15, often 16. She's not an aggressive driver, but I think she doesn't drive "smartly". I have always understood that the best MPG is obtained by accelerating quickly to speed, then backing off. That's pretty much how I drive.

I think a lot of people are mixing up MPH and MPG here! My dash readout consistently reads ~19 MPG mixed driving. I doubt 27 is possible even when on cruise control on the freeway at 65 mph. I think 22-24 max might be more accurate for that scenario.

Nope-There is no reason these cars can not get high 20's on the freeway.
The average all-around mileage on my 550- is right at 21. And I have repeatedly gotten 27 plus to and from work -about a 15-16 mile trip.
25% of my driving is city-rest on freeway.
None of the MB techs around here are surprised with this mileage.
