2005 320CLK Cab
The tool/dipstick arrived today.
Ok, how the heck do you use it?
I see the spec sheet suggests for a 320CLK, the level is between 14.8 & 16.8
But the stick has two scales. at the bottom 50->200 and at the top 550->850.

Its a fight to get the stick most of the way in. Without forcing it, there's no way the handle will sit into the end of the tube.

So what's the trick?

If its anything like the transmission dipstick, I don't think it is supposed to fit all the way in. It should just rest on the bottom of the pan. Its definitely not designed to stay there when the car is running.

I still need to do this and am planning for this weekend. Does anyone know what size that washer is - M14? M16? Something else? I have been trying to find a selection box of crush washers but no-one seems to carry them.

I may do the annealing thing clydem mentioned.

you know those washers cost less than a $1 a piece.......... I ordered 5-6 of them, along with some other things over a year ago. If you can't find them, I'll get the part number off the package for you if you want.

The dipstick is a service dipstick. It is not designed to seat in the tube. It merely designed to touch a flat plate in the sump & measure from there up. Remove after measurement & replace the tube cap.

Yes, I know they are but mere pennies. Cost isn't the issue.

When I first changed the oil I had a few different sizes from other cars but none were the right fit, so I reused the one on it.

Fortunately I haven't had to order any parts since then and if I just order a $1 washer, it'll still cost me $10 in postage.

So I'll just swing by a parts place today and pick up one of the right size. Advance Autoparts claims it's a M14.

I changed my oil a few weeks ago. I used this 12VDC fluid extractor:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=231167252723

You can't go wrong for 30 bucks. I used it on my other 2 vehicles also. Drains the oil in about 10 minutes with no harm to the battery. Comes complete with 2 hoses and 2 clamps. Saved me from having to jack up the vehicle. I opened the oil filler cap while draining in case there was a vacuum. I drained the oil into 2 empty 5 quart containers. The pump removed almost exactly 8 quarts of oil. I used a fleece oil filter and 8 quarts of Mobil 1 0W-40 oil. My Dyno Mode indicator when measuring oil level does not tell me the amount of oil in liters or quarts. It simply states weather the level is OK or not. Sometime last year, I checked the oil level and the Dyno Mode oil indicator said my oil level was low and to add 1.0 qts of oil which I did. After adding that amount of oil the indicator stated the amount was correct. My point is I wonder how accurate the dyno mode is in measuring the amount of oil in your vehicle. I thought about using an oil dipstick which would be a lot more accurate.

That looks like a handy tool. I have a mityvac and it works wonderfully for my oil changes. I think I will order one of these extractors however, primarily for gasoline transfer for my generator if needed. thanks
