I have the extremely annoying double hinged centre console with the telephone. I removed the telephone and I understand the air conditioning for the rear seats is housed below.

I found a writeup for changing to the newer version but parts here are simply not available or so expensive it is not worth it. This is the link for anyone else https://mbworld.org/forums/clk-class...p-console.html

Anyway, has anyone modified the original one to make it more user friendly? I am considering trying to remove the stupid hinge arrangement and add a rear hinge but this might just make a mess of it.

The revised rolltop compartment is significantly smaller than the old style. It's barely big enough to hold a wallet and a cell phone charger cord. why install a rear hinge? It already has one to access the lower compartment. Maybe what you could do (and I'm not sure if this is possible) is remove the cell phone tray so that you would no longer need to use the side-open function and would have a taller main compartment.

Thanks for the idea, I will give that a go. Will post pics if it works out ok. Would be nice to have a better space to put things. I am afraid of using my glove compartment after it wouldn't close last time.
