2006 CLK 500 Clicking sound in engine bay
Hi guys I really need some assistance here, my clk has been clicking lately it started after a highway run i was bored and decided to see how fast she could go, I pushed her hard and held her there for awhile then "the clicking" it went away but now its back and seems as though its permanent... i have a video linked to the sound

First thing to check is the purge valve.
Only way to silence it is replacement.

you need a shade tree stethoscope. Either just get a long screwdriver and begin touching the blade end to different parts and hold you ear to the other end. you will hear/feel it when you are touching the right part. Other option is just a short length of garden hose, same procedure. You will hear it when you are on the right component.

If it's not the purge valve then it's likely a hydraulic lifter. They can sound very similar but obviously eminate from a different area.

that was my first guess because it goes away and comes back it led me to believe that it was something else because if it was the lifters then it would be constant right?

Not necessarily constant. In early stages of failure or severe fouling hydraulic lifters can pump up & then lose prime & pump up again making them erratic.

What about the catalytic converters? Is it possible they could be failing? Basically this is my plan next week ill be removing the secondary cats, resonator, replacing the purge valve, and opening up the valve covers to do an inspection of the lifters. I'd like to repair this myself but is it a difficult DIY the lifters I mean?

The Cat's won't make that noise. The only thing that can happen with Cats is a piece of the monolith breaks off when incandescent & rattles around in a silencer.
On the SOHC engines a hydraulic lifter was pretty easy because you had rockers. The M272/273 quadcam engines are direct cam on tappet engines which makes it a much more difficult DIY because you have to take out the cam running on the offending lifter.

Sorry. I don't have my WIS loaded at present. Maybe Rudeney or someone else could post for you.

This is no walk in the park. Camshaft removal on the M272/M273 is a major job. Here are the major highlights of the process from WIS:
http://benzbits.com/M273/Camshafts.pdf
http://benzbits.com/M273/Lifters.pdf
My advice, if it's just a little tappet noise, let it be.

Sorry ~ Is your car M113 powered? By 2006 all SA CLK's were M272/273 powered.
I always get caught out because in the US you called the M273 a CLK550 whereas ROW it remained a 500.
If you have a M113 it's easier because you have roller rockers with lifter element attached to the rocker.

Dont waste money on a tool. Just do it the old school way. Get a wooden broom and take the stick side off the brush. Then put your ear to one end. and hold it against all the viable noise making places. =P when you get to the one making noise you will notice the difference. =P

M112/113 Rocker arrangement.
You don't have to disturb the cams. These are beautiful engines. This would do a racing engine proud.

Yes, the M112/M113 is vastly easier to work on the valves.

Yes ~ in the past the US sometimes lagged the ROW in new model launches. The W203 as an example was a full year late to reach the US market. Why? who knows. I doubt this will happen in future although I do not understand W205 launching in 4 Matic only with RWD almost a year later.
