It does take the place of the CDC. Once installed and your phone is paired, the hands-free operation uses the standard phone and radio buttons, just like you had the OEM phone cradle installed. The iPod and setup is managed through the CDC controls. The 6 discs of the CDC become 6 "menus" on the mCAR. Disc 1 = "Playlist Selection", Disc 2 = "Artist Selection". Disc 6 is the setup menu, where you pair the phone and switch to Bluetooth streaming audio. Since the COMAND unit support CD text display, these menus and options appear on the screen. The standard radio does not support text display, so you have to memorize some of the functionality, or use "shortcuts" which are numeric sequences you "dial".
- Do you retain steering wheel controls such as volume and contacts
- Where did you mount yours
- Does the unit require mounting an external antenna
THANKS
Yes, all standard controls are retained - the steering wheel controls for volume work normally, track skip works for the iPod, and, if your phone supports it, Bluetooth streaming. Even the phone answer end end call buttons on the steering wheel work. Using the steering wheel controls to scroll to the "Phone" the MFD shows the phonebook where numbers can be selected and called. I have the COMAND head unit, so everything works there, too.
It is possible to install the mCAR unit it in the glove box in place of the CDC. It uses the two CDC connections - the MOST fiber wiring and the power connector. The only other connections you make are for the USB cable to the iPod, and a cable for the hands-free mic (I routed the wire up the A pillar and place my mic in the overhead control panel). I actually had the mCAR in my glove box for a week or so, then I decided to hide it in the "cage" that is located under the passenger floorboard carpet (next to the TCU).
The mCAR does not have any antenna connection at all. - Your cell phone uses its own antenna for phone functions, and the Bluetooth antenna is built-in.
