It could be a bad microswitch that is not recognizing that the top is closed. Try tightening the windshield lock using the Allen wrench tool in the manual slot on the header. If that doesn't work, you may need to manually open then close the top (instructions for manual closing are in the owner's manual, and I know I have also posted a video here showing the details).

If the soft top cover (the panel between the trunk and the back seat) is definitely closed, you should be able to manually open the trunk lid. Insert the mechanical key in its lock, and turn it counter-clockwise, then holding it there, pull on the handle. This should open the trunk so you can access the locks for manual open/close of the top.

Your owner's manual had instructions for manual closing. For manual opening, it's the same except that you "unlock" the top at the windshield, and once the rear lid is popped open, you lift the glass, then open the lid, then fold the top into the trunk. Here's the video for manual close:

If this seems like too much to tackle, you might want to get professional help from a dealer or MBZ-specialized indy shop.

BENZ CLK500 open roof issue

Dear Rudeney,

My first priority is how the trunk will be unlock.
I have tried several time trying to unlock the trunk with the mechanical key but it won't unlock, i'm sure that the top in-operation is what lock my trunk.
Can i unlock the trunk through the back seat?
I took the car to a dealer and he check the engine under the trunk plate number and he said that the trunk can only be unlock through electrical.
Kindly advice.

Thanks

The "emergency" release button on the inside of the trunk will not work if the soft top is not recognized as closed - it uses the same electrical interlock as the button on the driver's door.

When you tried the mechanical key, did you pull the handle with the key rotated clockwise? Note that just rotating the key does not unlock the trunk - it simply moves a cog inside the lock so that pulling the handle will then mechanically release the latch. It's purely mechanical so top open or close should not matter (of course you would not want to open the trunk lid unless the soft top cover is closed, otherwise they will collide and be damaged).

Just to verify, I went out to my car and started the roof opening and then stopped it. I verified that I could not open the trunk with the handle, SmartKey fob button, or driver's door button; with the top not completely opened or closed, the trunk lid latch is electronically disabled.

I then inserted the mechanical key in the trunk lock, rotated it 90-degrees counter-clockwise (as far as it will go), held it in that position, then squeezed the handle. The trunk lock released and I was able to open the lid.

I believe the switch is part number A2098201910. I am not sure what is broken on the flap - there are several parts to it.
