Steering wheel shifters (paddle shifters) on CLK 500 only shift up

I have a 2006 CLK 500. I've noticed when using the paddle shifters that both left and right paddles shift up. Shouldn't the left side shift down? Can someone tell me how to correct this?

Try resetting the steering column module by pulling fuse #57 (front SAM, panel under the hood) for a minute.

According to the fuse diagram fuse 57 is ESP (electronic stability program)

It's for the steering column module, which also controls the steering angle sensor. Removing this fuse may mean you need to re-calibrate the steering angle sensor by turning the wheel lock-to-lock half a dozen times.
