2004 CLK 500 - Smoke From A/C Vents

Hi:

Today I was driving with the A/C on and smoke started coming from the A/C vents definitely smelled like electrical. The A/C shut off and then came back on with smoke coming out of the vents. I turned off the A/C and drove home and no smoke. Any idea what this can be? It's above 100 degrees here everyday and the closest mechanic is 40 miles away. Luckily I don't have to drive everyday - but I really need to know what it could be.

Thanks

Chris

How humid is it where you are? You sure it was smoke?

A common problem on that engine is leaky valve cover seals the drip oil on the exhaust manifold. That can get sucked into the ventilation system intake. However, since you say the AC shut off and came back on, I might look at the blower motor to see if it might be failing.

I was definitely smoke and it was pretty thick and smelled like electrical wire burning. The blower came back on and the air was cold. But all lot of smoke was coming out. Turned off the A/C. Drove home without any more smoke. Could it be some kind of switch? Is this going to cost a fortune to repair?

The blower motor is very easy to remove. Just remove the plastic panel under the passenger's side dash, and the blower is there with three bolts holding it in place. I'd check it for signs of burning (smell and color).

This about all there is in WIS:

It's really easy - just a few screws.

Do you suggest to do regular cleaning on the blower unit?

I've never cleaned any of mine, but I guess they could collect dust, even with a good cabin air filter. You might as well clean it while you have it pulled out.
