Arrow Adding backup camera Comand headunit?

I found this thread:

https://mbworld.org/forums/r-class-w...ml#post3550555

Seems like if you have the navigation comand headunit one can use a backup camera if you can unlock it it via STAR...

Looks to be pin 1 and 7 as pictured below.

Just wondering if anyone has done this... doesn't seem too bad and would be great to have a backup camera feature. Does anyone know the engineering mode to get into comand as far as the buttons that need to be pressed..etc?

Thanks,
-Nigel

If i am not mistaken the connectors might be the same but w209 amd w203 is factory locked to not have a backup camera, even if you got the wires connected correctly and then tried to use STAR, there is just no option in STAR to turn it on.

I know this is an old thread, but we were discussing this over on the SL forum, and I was doing some research on the CLK. If it works like it did on my SL, it is very simple and cheap as long as you have access to SDS. On the back of the COMAND unit, if there is a green FAKRA connector, that is for the camera. All you need is a $9 FAKRA-to-RCA pigtail, a camera to connect to it, and SDS to code the COMAND for "BACKUP CAMERA = ACTIVE".

On the SL, this was option was only available in the "developer mode" adaptations, meaning only the Chinese clone systems can do it - not dealers. But checking the CLK's options, it appears to be in the standard adaptations, so it;s possible for a dealer to do, but of course it would be preferable to find an friend or indy with SDS.

This is what we found on the SL:

So, if anyone is interested and tries this, let me know how it goes!

Yep, on the back of our 05' comand unit there was no green fakra connector. However with our 09' w211 there most definitely was and I added a backup camera.

It's pretty oem looking. The only thing I would have changed was give the camera to a body shop guy so they could have painted it the exterior color of the car, which would have made it blend in perfectly.

But it works great.

That's awesome. I love the comand ntg 2.5 that comes on the 09 E class. I wish they had released those a couple of years earlier and on more models. Looks great

That's odd. When I look at W209 COMAND units for sale on eBay, I see green FAKRA connectors in their photos.

Whoever is selling that unit on eBay needs to change their listing. That's a Euro version comand ntg 1.0 (for E, CLS) with the CD changer on top. The C, CLK has the ntg 2.0 with the cd changer and dvd drive behind the screen. Makes sense if ours doesn't have the extra plugs since they've already packed the gateway, radio, amp, etc all in one piece hence leaving little room for other things. Damn that would've been a nice easy way to add backup camera.

DOH! You are right! I sure wish that I still had the CLK so I could play around with this. I have read some other forums (R and ML) where some guys figured out how to add a camera, like we did on the SL. NTG 2 COMAND units are all pretty much the same except for shape. I recall a guy on one of the forums (R-Class?) foudn a video input that was not a FAKRA connector.

I found some more comprehensive wiring diagrams and put a copy here:

http://benzbits.com/RadioWiring.pdf

Also, looking at Nigel's photo, what is that small white connector, almost on the top?

Hi there ,

Hey so in order for the for the back up Camwra to work with the fakra head unit is you need to get TV Tuner .
Can be expensive to get it and very rare plus you need to find all of that wiring that goes with the tv tuner.
I found another solution by purchasing a module but needs some retrofitting and this is done thru original head unit. If interested PM me and will give you all the details
