Burning Smell

After changing my MAF, I noticed a burning smell under the hood. I circled where I think the smell is coming from.

What car/engine is this? (It would be most helpful if you'd update your forum user's profile and include that info!). If this is a CLK320 or CLK500, it is most likely the head cover seals that are leaking and dripping onto the exhaust. It's a common problem on the M112/M113 engines.

Sorry 04 CLK500. Head cover is the Oil filler neck? If this the problem,i n the mean time is it bad to drive the car?? Or to turn on the car and warm it up? Is there a DIY thread and with the parts # needed? Thanks much appreciated.

Head covers (a.k.a. valve covers) are the large covers that sit on top of the heads that cover the camshaft and rockers. It's a fairly easy DIY. You'll want genuine MBZ gaskets as the aftermakets are often not thick enough and will leak.

There are breather covers on the head covers use for crankcase ventilation (they do the job of a PCV valve on older engines). They have rubber hoses that connect to the intake and those are often brittle and need replacement, too. The breather covers need to be removed from the head covers and thoroughly cleaned. They use black RTV instead of a pre-formed gasket.

Here's the WIS doc:

So after reading threads after threads, starting to understand the car. So the oil filler gasket or cap needs replacing or both? I noticed the oil leaking down to coils and valve cover, is that bad? I can wipe it clean with water? and should I top up a bit of oil?, since some leaked out.

THanks GUYs

A new oil filler cap gasket might help (part #A1110180080) but it's probably leaky head cover seals.

Bought a new cap today. Came with the gasket already. And wiped most of the oil off with a cloth and warm water.
