2004 CLK 320 top will not go down
Just got the car and my top makes alittle noise but does not attempt to lower the top. Says gets service. I check and the boot is in place. I noticed that one of the rear head rest back covers are missing and was wondering if it may of fallen off down into the area where the head rest goes down. Does the head rest move in the procedure? I hate to go to Mercedes with this. The car isn't worth that much. But it may be the cheapest way to go. Suggestions, comments and answers. love to see her work again in all of its glory. Thanks

What does the message actually say? It does not say "gets service", and is that message only there when you try the top, or all the time? No, the headrests do not move in the process. Are they fully lowered? Put them down if not with the button on the center stack. If the windows are up when you try to lower the top, do the windows all go down? That is the first step - all four windows should go down. Does anything at all happen after that? Does the "little noise" sound like a motor running in the back? Have you checked your fluid level like I said to do over on the W208 thread? Is it full to the line? That is step one. The problem is either hydraulic or electrical but we cannot know which until you give some basic information. If your fluid is gone then you probably have a leak somewhere.

One consideration is that we need to know if you have a w208 or W209. The "model year" of the car has little to do with the "registration year". In the USA, "model year" is how we refer to our cars, but in other countries, their taxes are based on "registration year", so many of those folks get the two confused. So, the easiest way to tell if you have a W208 or W209 is this: If your headlights have totally separate lenses for high and low beams, you have a W208. If your headlight's high and low beam lenses are "merged" into one unit, then you have a W209.
Regardless, you also need the headrests completely lowered for the top to operate. So, are yours fully lowered? Also, if possible, a video or pictures would be a great help here.

Most people never raise them. But there is a button on the center stack above the NAV screen in those two rows of buttons. They drop real fast and hard. If fully lowered they just barely strick up above the seat back.

But they should also lower automatically when you lower the soft top. If not, then it's possible the "roll bars" deployed. If so, there is a lever that needs to be released by inserting a tool (basically, the Allen wrench included in the car int he trunk). Instructions are in the owner's manual.
