Why does my V6 sound like a V8?
Now, normally this would be a good thing but....
05 CLK320 conv. w/68k. When I got it 5 years ago it was whisper quiet and loved it. The first time I changed the air-filters, and the old ones were pretty dirty, there was a noticeable change in engine noise that I put down to better airflow. (I imagined it was like a ram-air sort of sound). At low revs it was noiser but that went away above about 25 mph. And this may be what it should sound like and be un-related to recent developments
However, lately, it has gotten louder and louder. More of a roar, not a usual sounding exhaust leak, but makes the car sound very "uncivilized"
Definitely engine speed related, but doesn't sound transmission related.
New EGR 12 month ago and new crankcase position sensor replacement last month, if relevant. But there was no step-change after either of these repairs
I don't have a video yet and I'm not sure if it would be picked up on one, but I thought I'd describe it and see if it reminds anyone of anything.

i almost spit my coffee when i read your title.
youre right, a lot of V6 owners dream of that and are still dreaming of that.
no matter what high quality muffler or exhaust system they put in their V6, it still wont sound like a V8, i guess it never will.
now back to your "problem", any power loss that you noticed? hopefully you can upload a video so other members can listen.

It was the engine mounts. I replaced them and voila, the car was back to whisper quiet. One of the mounts had literally exploded while the other one was near its end-of-life.
I hope this is it for you. Have a mechanic or yourself inspect them and then decide.

yup engine mounts as xsever said. had the same "issue" i did. total bummer back then when the i lost that nice sound. the m112 has a 90 degree V. They are prone to more vibration and eating engine mounts. I changed mine twice in 3 years.

Thanks. This is why I love forums.
I would have been a long time thinking of engine mounts, but I guess I am getting into the "perished rubber" phase of ownership
I have a set of control arms witing to be installed becasue of persished rubber bushing
Any recommendations on manufacturers to use or avoid?
DIY job or "proper" mechanic? I have done them on other cars, but it all depends on access and ability to prop engine, I guess.
EDIT - I see the lemfoerdner ones are $70, so I'll use them. I'll probably do the trans mount at the same time

For the engine and transmission mounts, I bought this Lemforder package from Amazon for $160.
Good luck!

The reason engine mounts would cause louder engine noise could just be a greater sense of noise due to additional vibration, but it also could be that it puts stress on the exhaust system and causes the gaskets where the downpipes meet the manifold to leak. The bolts there are spring-loaded so they can flex.

One way to check your engine mounts:
After you first start your engine (in the morning when engine is cold), if you feel vibration in Drive and if none in Neutral, your engine mounts are due for replacement.
This was exactly my experience and all good after the engine mounts were replaced. I also replaced the transmission mount at the same time.

have a friend help you and put it in gear with foot on brake and give it some gas and see what kind of movement you have. Mounts can cause a vibration and noise. Yes change the transmission mount also.
Good luck

I looked at some videos on YT of engines with failed mounts and there was noticeable movement of the engine. (Going from D to R and back again)
When I checked mine, it seemed minimal, so I was discounting it. Then I checked my X3 and that engine didn't move at all, so now I am not sure.
Here's a couple of vids from indie the cabin, so the detail isn't great. What do you think?

im not sure how a bad engine/transmission mount can make it sound like how you describe it. (even nefore you posted the videos) it will have the shakes and vibrations but minimal effect on the sound.
cant really tell from your videos but it does sound deeper for a 320. did you notice any power loss since? best bet is to bring it to a reputable shop for diagnosis.

well beejAMG, both xsever and I had loud sounding engines at all the whole rpm range, its a sound you here from the interior and not from outside. Replacing the engine mounts changed the engine note from the inside significantly. (sure, the engine note didn't change it was vibration that was causing the v8 sound).

Childish? Very.
Honestly now, xsever is a very close friend from outside this forum, i dont need to win him over. Neither do i need to win over other people for my side because i dont think this is even an argument. Im not even sure i know what this is.. I shouldnt even have replied but what the hell.

look, for your own sake, i hope its just the mounts as its a simple and cheap fix. i never once said people are lying nor did i say its not the problem. all i said its highly unlikely.
ive had an E320 with the worst case on engine/transmission mount. i have a V8. and the sound dont even come close.

are you freaking serious? how is that calling you a liar?
also, if you read through all the comments, not everybody agree with your "mounts theory" 100%. why single me out?
now you can interpret it however way you want it. im not here to please you or worry about your feelings. youre a sad lil thing.

Please let us know after the mounts are changed if the sound is gone just like with our experience or not. Thank you.
