I'll give you some details from the German price list
Design- and Equipment-line »ELEGANCE«:

CLK 270 CDI - won't be sold in the US, I think...
5-Cylinder Diesel w. direct injection, manual 6-gear, 125kW/170HP, 2685ccm
29.440,-- USD
[CLK 200 Kompressor, CLK 200 CGI, CLK 240 - also won't be sold in the US]

CLK 320
6-Cylinder, automatic 5-gear, 160kW/218HP, 3199ccm
33.917,15 USD

CLK 500
8-Cylinder, automatic 5-gear, 225kW/306HP, 4966ccm
42.385,47 USD

CLK 55 AMG
8-Cylinder, automatic 5-gear, 270kW/367HP, 5439ccm
58.444,56 USD

Prices are without value add tax!
I've just converted the Euro price to USD! Therefor you've to add overpass (?) fee. US prices will be higher...

I live in the UK and placed an other for a CLK320 this weekend - hoping to get it before the end of the year! I managed to get a preview of the Uk price list...

A little bit more expensive than the german prices, but we get a little better spec in the UK and we always pay more than the rest of europe as anybody who lives in the UK knows already.....

Available 6th June...
200K £27,240
240 £29,190
270CDI £29,685
320 £34,590
500 £43,040

Available Sept...
AMG55 £57,000 estimated

Not currently available
200CGI £n/a

Question

Hi Pissman,

are you sure that the CLK 500 costs 70.340,-- € in the UK?
In Germany it's 48.300,-- € w/o value add fee and within 56.028,-- €
I didn't know that the differences are that high...

For those in the UK, I did some price analysis on the SL (R230) comparing UK to EU some months ago.

UK has 17.5% VAT, Germany has 16%. so I compared pre-vat prices.

UK tends to get more stuff as standard [ie, we have less choice], and we get a 3rd year warranty and wheel locks ! For instance on the SL we get COMAND and Xenon and a few others as standard

If you add in all those options that are standard, the price difference between UK and DE is about 10%. Im told that to order a RHD car in DE adds 4% of that 10%.

If you just compare the option prices [for all the stuff we like to add] theres a whopping 30% price differential ..

Obviously the UK dealers dont like "imports", so they are not as willing to help you out if its imported (such as persuading MB to warranty stuff that is just out of warranty), and some dealers wont take imports for part-exchange, and if they do they offer a load less for the car (but then you paid a load less, so thats OK!)

R

Cheers
Richard

Talking

Hi jff2k

Yup - for sure those prices are correct. I read them directly from a fax the dealer had from mbuk...

Richard is correct.. we do get more stuff as std but even if you look at the options price list we still pay more than the rest of europe... Im not sure but perhaps germany is the cheapest for Mercs, given they are built there ??

Ive done a quick calc of my own, and for the price we pay in the uk for a CLK320 - I could buy a CLK500 in germany....

34,590 GBP = 56,417 Euro

So both cars incl local tax :
UK CLK320 = €56,417
German CLK500 = €56,028

Hmmmm... Get me on the next plane to germany....

UK resolves furure SYNC with continental Europe! There is hope:

New Uk Government Plans

Found this on the web, government have released a white paper which will affect
the motorist in a big way!

They have announced that it is vital that Britain ties in with mainland Europe in
every way possible to attract more tourists to the country and to strengthen it's
union while the world is going through such great financial change.

They have stated that the Euro will be introduced into Britain in April 2003 and
the GBP will be phased out by April 2004.

Next comes the BIG news!

The only thing that will remain in Britain which is different to mainland Europe is
that we drive on the left hand side.

During January 2004 the roads will be changed over so that British drivers will
drive on the right hand side of the road, this gives the government and local
councils 20 months to change road signs and make plans for how this will be
changed over.

Following the introduction of this scheme, and depending on it's success the
government plans to phase out ALL RHD cars by the end of 2010!

to view the white paper, so you can see for yourself and look into the regulations
a bit further, follow this link -

This is NOT "April 1" UK material.

It is part of an economic trend report by the U.S.G.:

"The relationship with Europe also dominates the economic landscape of the UK, particularly whether the United Kingdom should adopt the single European currency (Euro).

The Labour government has stated that a decision on whether to join the Euro will be made on the basis of strict economic self-interest, and only if approved by the electorate in a public referendum.
Most observers do not expect a referendum on the Euro before 2003 at the earliest.

As the European Union (EU) continues to integrate, instances of friction may arise between the UK's more flexible economic environment and the model in place in the rest of Europe."
