Steering wheel wobble problem... strangely different.

Hi,

I've gone thought most of the wobble threads but i can't seems to determine which is more similar to mine...

here's the current situation.

Had steering wheel wobble when i stepped on the brakes at speeds higher than 20 when i got the MB. Had all 4 tires rebalanced and checked. It seems it was all good... So i had the both front brake rotors and pads replaced.

Was alright for about a week...but its back...

Now i'm feeling 3 things.

1. A steering wheel wobble and a feeling of wobble at my butt when i depress the brakes at about 45-55mph...

2. a small wobble sensation when i'm driving at speeds at 40-55mph with braking.

3. a right drift to the right at all speeds. I mean if i leave the steering along... i'll prob end up at the curb in a second...

I've read that it might be tires? the tires are Nitto Motive and i think its about 3 years old. with more than 70% thread left...

Control steering arm is the other...

Anyone has encountered this before and can offer me some advise?

oh... there's also this big "clank" sound from the back whenever i go over a hump slight faster. sounded like the spring came out of its socket and realigned back or something... but its been a week since it came out of the workshop and its still doing that clank thing.

So many issues... lol need to get it fixed one by one...

Thank you!

I would not call the feeling from warped brake discs a "wobble" but that may just be semantics. Warped brake discs is more of a fast, pulsing, shimmy. It may be that braking is applying a force that is causing some other loose part of your suspension to move. If it were tires, I'd expect you would feel it all the time, not just while braking. You should get your whole suspension inspected if you cannot do it yourself. Could be as simple as somebody forgot to tighten your lug nuts.

Have the alignment checked. If the front toe is out, you can get some wobble when braking.

yeah... thats the problem, It seems to happen more when i drive it around more. the wobble at low speed is kinda intermittent. I feel it... and then its not there. I'm starting to even doubt myself. Maybe i'm just a little over sensitive.

I will have that checked. Hope they find something you mean the 4 wheel alignment checks correct?

I don't think so? don't really feel the brakes or any grinding... might be alignment like Ron mentioned? I will take a look just in case.

You should get a 4-wheel alignment, but bad front toe will often cause thew wobble feeling.

got some more accurate diagnosis today from another shop. (I have been to 3 shops... and none found anything until today)

Right control arm has a loose ball joint. (I assume this would be the front toe?) and left front has a loose bearing wheel which is slightly negligible... just a little bit of a shake.

Rear right is mis aligned pretty bad. And it has a almost bald tire on the inside...

Well at least its discovered... along with tire change for the back... its going to set me back almost $850... The price sounds fair... does it? (tires are prob going for about 320? for a pair?

$320 for a pair for rear tires for my car would be a fire sale. The control arm ball joint looseness could to some degree mimic or affect toe, but ball joints are not what control toe. Toe is adjusted with your tie rod ends, which screw in and out on the end of your steering rack - the thing that turns your wheels. No idea on the price being fair because we do not know what all is being done in the rear.

Wow! I'm getting nittos... so i guess its in the range of $300? (discount tires are going for $145 each)

The replacement control arm is going to be for the front right. so thats the bulk of the cost...
For the rear i would just be the cost of the 4 wheel alignment. Nothing will be change... I'll report back on whether that fixed the problem... nothing scares me more than a wobbly car...

My rears are over $200 each. Who is doing this work? You said your rear was way out, but the only thing to adjust back there is toe. The wear on your inner tire edges may not change at all. That is commonly due to way too much negative camber - tires lean in at the top when viewed from behind or in front. It's a common trait on these cars. Toe is how pigeon-toed your wheels are when viewed from above. From the factory, the camber cannot be adjusted, although there are aftermarket solutions. Because of the camber, my rear tires last only about 13,000 miles. But that's two years for me, so I don't really care.

A bad control arm ball joint can affect camber and toe. Honestly, I would not replace just one front control arm - I'd do all four.

Turns our the front right control arm has a loose ball join... along with a really badly mis alighned back tire with high toe in angle...

Also replaced the almost bald rear tires...

So that kinda fixed the vibration issue... Not feeling much now thank you so much for your great advise!
