My 6 CD changer bit the dust, so I removed it. And I intentionally destroyed it to to get the stuck CDs out so reinstalling is not an option. Now I have no audio from any source, and sat radio simply says there is none. I knew this would happen because I guess I now have an open fiber optic loop? Anyway, what do I need to restore my audio and sat radio? I know I've seen these threads before, but I must be using the wrong search terms.
You need a fiber optic coupler to bypass the CD Player. The part number for the earlier model CLK up to 2004 & ML up to 2005 is 000 545 33 84 which is the DB2 type. IIRC 2005 or 2006 has a different system, but search for newer coupler should work.
I removed mine and used an older (D2B) coupler on my newer (MOST) system. I scavenged the connector from the trunk of the C240 since I had installed an analog radio in it and the fiber loop was unused. The actual fiber itself is the same in both versions once you remove it from the plastic connector.
That photo shows two parts and I think either will work. The bottom "loop" just plugs right into the harness that was disconnected from the changer. The top part is a fiber coupler and that's what I scavenged from the C240. To us it, I had to snap apart the plastic connector that I unplugged from the changer to expose the raw fiber cables. I then stuck them into either side of that coupler and snapped the metal clamps shut and all was well. For $6.50, I'd probably just order that plug-and-play loop from eBay.
This is all news to me. My changer also died. Took it out and threw it away.....tuner, cassette etc all still worked fine....no optic loop needed.....the old cable is still just dangling in my glove box ! LOL!

I believe that is because you do not have the upgraded Bose audio system. It isn't particularly common in U.K. Cars. Neither of my two had it, and none I had visited with a view to purchasing did, either. Standard audio doesn't use the fibre optic connections.

Yes ....and no! Having looked into it a little further.....! My car does have optic connectors but between the HU and the CD changer. It does not have them between the head unit and the amp.....because it does not have a separate amp at all! The head unit drives all the speakers directly. This setup does not care whether the changer is connected or not.
Without the updated audio system (Bose or Harmon-Kardon), the amp is in the head unit, and the fiber loop is used for the CD changer and telematics (TeleAid and cell phone interface). In this case, removing the changer won't cause any audio problems but if you had the cell phone or TeleAid, it might not work.
All USA model W209's had the updated audio systems, so with the fiber loop "broken" the amp gets no signal, thus the requirement of installing this adapter.
Mostly just because I'm an*l about originality, and not because I actually use the CD changer, I decided to just buy a used unit off e-bay for $70.00. I am curious about one thing though. For every audio source except satellite radio, including navigation, it all "works", there is just no sound. But for satellite radio, the screen says "no satellite radio." Why is satellite radio different?
Oh, yeah, the SDAR tuner is connected via fiber, so if the loop is broken, it can't see it. i wish I had known you needed a changer - i still have the one I pulled out of my CLK I need to get rid of. It was still working when I removed it.

I've seen these advertised on Ebay. They are an optical return thst completes the circuit.
