Anyone found a use to the dashboard pop out tray? (A 209 680 0679)

Hi everyone, I've got a silly question . Has anyone found the intended usage of the pop-out tray located between the passenger seat heater control and the glovebox? In my 2004 CLK 320 Elegance trim (european) the tray has an odd down-curved shape, a flip lid (!), and it is surprisingly deep. The ditzy female I drove home last night dropped her lipstick inside and couldn't retrieve it. I've never used it and forgot its existence until last night. So what is that thing? Surely not a cup holder nor a phone compartment.

The picture is not my CLK. This is just to show which compartment I'm refering to.

I use it for a BIC lighter and a couple packs of lens wipes and a few dollars. There are other places to keep these things but it allows for quick access for me. I wear glasses and I smoke (but not in the car). It is infrequent that I smoke away from the garage or the deck, but if I want to during a stop, I can always find the lighter (pack of cigs in the glove box). The dollars there is handy for drive throughs. It is quicker to get these things from that little drawer w/o having to move larger stuff out pf the way in the console or glove box.

I guess it can used for anything that will fit that the owner deems convenient.

To get that lipstick you can hold the brake, rev the engine to 2500 RPM, then simultaneously release the brake and floor the accelerator...…

In 2006 & older clk's, US versions use this as a cup holder. Not very bright cause liquids have been known to spill damaging the radio & dashboard electronics. In 2007 & newer MB placed cup holders in the a center console

My 05' was big enough to fit a drink in, but my 09' is much narrower so I use it to hold my copilot

I kept a roll of $100 bills in mine to be used in case I ever needed to visit the dealer for service.
