Electric Seat won't recline back CLK W209

Hi guys,

Have an issue with my driver seat.

The driver electric backrest will fold forward but wont recline back, which now is at a point that if I move the seat forward anymore it will be non drive-able if I cant get it to fold back.

When i press the forward switch It makes a clicking noise exactly the same as the other working switches do in the dash and around the floor/under seat area.

All other movements work fine e.g forward/back and the seat cushion tilt.

I have checked all the fuses next to steering wheel and in the boot all are fine.

I have disconnected battery for an hour with no luck.

I tried seat reset *moving seat backwards on rails all way, the holding 5 seconds. Then moving it forward to end of rail and holding 5 seconds* no luck.

Tried tapping the motor with a wrench, no luck :')

I have read that the *Seat Control Switch* ( Switches on door to move seat positions ) can sometimes need replacing?

Taking everything into consideration does anyone know it its likely to be the Seat Control Switch or a under Seat Model problem?

Im assuming motor is fine as it will move forwards just not backwards, also it makes the same clicking noise as the working switches it just wont move back.

Hopefully iv listed enough info for somebody to know what i'm on about or know the solution

Any help will be much appreciated

Thanks
Jay

NO LONGER ACTIVE
If you press the switch and hear clicking under the seat form the motor, then it's not the switch. It's most likely a bad motor (servo) for the seat.

Ah right ill forget about the switch then thanks for that,

My plan is to remove back panel off seat to expose the recline motor, then cut the live/neutral (red/black) wires and attach them to a 12v phaze jump starter in reverse power, hopefully that will reverse the motor and at least recline the seat.

Need to double check that will be safe first though!

Thanks for your info Rudeney

Same issue

Hi did you resolve the problem ? I have exactly the same issue on my 2003 CLK320 except it will recline back but not forward. I was suspecting the seat control module which I assume is under the seat.

Hi mate, I manually moved mine to a comfortable fixed position with a jump starter and 2 wires connected to crocodile clips. It was very easy, here’s how..

The motor is on the back bottom left side of the front seats, very easy to access just remove 2 screws to remove panel on back of seat.

Then simply unplug the wire connector on top of the motor.

Then run wires from the jump starters +/- to the motors +/- (doesn’t matter which way). Place a piece of cardboard in between the crocodile clips on the motor connectors to stop them touching. Then simply turn on the jump starter and touch the wires on the positive and negative for movement one way and reverse the wires for opposite movement.

Then leave it disconnected.

I also disconnected the head rest motors after getting them into a good position. No more headrests stuck on the roof when folding seats!

Also if you don’t have a jump starter I think I managed this with a 9v battery with a wire connector too but can’t fully remember if it worked.

A drill battery would definitely work just need 2 more small crocodile clips.

A bit of a long explanation but hope you understood and this helps

Also a tip, once wires are connected to motor have the battery next to you on the passenger seat so you can sit in the driver seat touch wires on the +\- bit by bit and feel what position you want it locked to.

Also all other motor movements will work this is just disabling the recliner motor. And possibly head rest motor but can’t remember if that cable is separate or not.

I decided there was no point in attempting an expensive, tricky and possibly non successful module change.

The odds are with old Mercedes electronics it will break again haha!

I’d prefer fully manual seat knobs tbh lol

Look under the seat. There is a terminal block where wires are connected on both sides. I once found 1 wire had broke a the terminal tab. Probably from moving the seat back up and back. Could be the one to your motor.

I have fixed it, funny enough I just pushed the seat all the way forward and then it fixed itself, now everything is working...

I know this is an ancient thread that was revived, but adding my experience in here, I think a lot of the headrest and seat back issues derive from the switch at the bottom of the seat when you lift the seat forward (like letting someone in the back seat behind the driver).

What has worked for me was removing the rear seat panel (two bolts at the bottom and the panel slides downward and out) so you can expose the motors. Then lift the seat forward while checking the wiring connections under the seat.
