Noise from down under: Can you place this noise?

Hi All,

Had a noise come up the other day, noticed after the car had been driven for an hour or so, and left running for about 30 minutes in a parking lot. Heard it on the highway on the way home, pulled over, looked underneath the car, etc.

Got it home and put the car up on ramps, both front and back. Undercladding has a couple of spots that were roughed up, but nothing making this noise. Video below.

It sounds rotational, starts around 18mph+, continues in Neutral whole rolling, and sounds like a rock rolling around a tin can. I have heard of the e-brake cable clip breaking and touching the driveshaft, which it may be, but I have also drove down the road “dragging” the e-brake by depressing the pedal to tighten the cable up. No dice.

Let me know if you have any ideas what it can be. I’ve gotten it up in ramps but will not be able to get it on a lift until Tuesday/Wednesday.

I love puzzles.

I'll just throw some ideas out there, which you may have already considered:
1) Some debris hanging underneath that's dragging on the ground.
2) Something hanging in one of your wheel wells.
3) Something hanging in your engine compartment - perhaps near the front by the grill, perhaps on/near your belts or pulleys.
4) Some debris loose in your air box.

Some additional questions:
1) Does it intensify/change with speed?
2) Does it intensify/change with engine temperature?
3) Does it intensify/change when turning? You can go into an empty lot and drive in a circle - first clockwise, then counter-clockwise.
4) Want to confirm - After warmup, does it make the noise at idle, or always at idle? If at idle then it couldn't be anything hanging in the wheels.

Two more tests to consider:

1) After driving awhile to heat up, go to an empty road with a slight incline. Put the car in neutral with engine off and let it glide down and see if you still hear the sound.
2) Empty road, have someone stand outside to listen. OR, you stand outside and have them drive past you at 18mph. Is the sound the same?

To me it does not sound serious, but what do I know!

I'm very curious to hear the outcome!

JB, glad to see someone is on the case with me!

to answer your questions, I have looked under the car and see nothing hanging. Same with the wheel wells.

the sound does change in intensity the faster I go, but still sounds “rattle-y” - it does not change with engine temp. I need a little more room to do the left and right turns at speed, but from what I can tell, it does not have any effect on the sound!

I need to have someone drive my car by- this is the next test I think. I also got a quick video to upload of the sound from inside the cabin, next to a wall so the sound reverberates. Will post shortly!

Here is the second video:

I wish it didn’t sound so serious, but to me it sounds like it could be a precursor to something a little more intense!

let me know if this noise sounds familiar!

Since I posted last I did a couple of things;

Got it up on the rack. A couple areas where the cladding was loose, but secured those- noise is still there. Didnt see anything like the E brake cable touching the driveshaft, which is what i was thinking it may have been.

Does anyone have a video of what it sounds like when a flex disc is bad? The sounds seems to be coming from the transmission/driveshaft assembly

I went to a parking lot and got it up to speed and killed the engine, noise still persists. Which makes me think that it would be a transmission/driveshaft issue.

Any suggestions helpful!

A bad flex disk sounds like someone is hammering the floor from below. I can hardly hear the noise on the video.

You need to provide more diagnostic information. Does the sound change with accelerator pedal? If you hear the sound in neutral, it's likely not drivetrain joint related, although there could be something loose tapping on or near any of the rotating shafts. (wires, tape, paper, etc.).

What side of the car is it coming from - left, right, front, rear?

What happens when you apply the brakes? Louder? Quieter?

What happens when you sit in the parking lot and rev the engine?

What happens on a bumpy road? What happens on a smooth road?

What happens in a curve?

Does the sound change with accelerator pedal?
- It is more pronounced when coasting and seems to go quieter/faster when accelerating

If you hear the sound in neutral, it's likely not drivetrain joint related, although there could be something loose tapping on or near any of the rotating shafts. (wires, tape, paper, etc.).
- I will do this tomorrow. I have turned the motor off when at speed (18-24mph) and heard the noise persist

What side of the car is it coming from - left, right, front, rear?
- Front, sounds as if it’s directly under the radio (meaning front right when in drivers seat and front left when passenger)

What happens when you apply the brakes? Louder? Quieter?
- no change

What happens when you sit in the parking lot and rev the engine?
- no noise

What happens on a bumpy road? What happens on a smooth road?
- seemingly no change

What happens in a curve?
- need to do at speed, will test tomorrow

answers above!

Perhaps something loose in the air ducts?
At idle, in neutral, increase, then decrease the fan.

I can check this, but seems more rotational.

Here is a video with the windows up, starting from a stop:

I sure hope that's not coming from something inside your engine or drivetrain!

Working on something else but noted a brace just aft of the mouth of the channel under the car. It is tan in color on my car. This is not the larger black braces about 12 inches forward of the channel. You might check that it is tight if you have not already done so.

Update!

Apparently, there was a piece of rubber that had come out/got shredded in the center driveshaft support ring and would flap with the rotation of the driveshaft. The rubber was removed and everything should be good!

Thanks for the help, everyone.
