SCREEN REPLACEMENT??? ADVICE/HELP NEEDED

We have a 2007 CLK550. GREAT CAR!!! The dash screen has deteriorated. It has some darkish lines in it and the film on top has some small bumps. Everything works, but it is mainly just an expensive control for the radio LOL...

We got a price to replace it and ADD a rearview camera from a good sound shop. They were replacing it with an Alpine system and screen. Their price was $2200. This car is not our daily use car. It is a cabriolet and is just a fun date night car for me and my wife. It does not get a lot of use but it is in excellent condition except for the ugly screen. Also, because we do not use it a lot, I don't want to put over 2 grand into a 16 year old car ----- no matter how much we like it. But I am a little picky about things and do not like looking at the screen as it is. It bugs me.

Is this a typical problem? What is a good economical solution? Is there even one? Thank you and any advice is appreciated... we need some help.

Yeah, the labor cost is what you are seeing here and that seems on the high side. But if you don't know how to properly remove dash trim pieces and plug in a stereo, that is your only option.

Is it a typical problem? Sort of, on cars that are 10yrs+ old. Electronics wear from being touched and used, so if this car were kept in a wrapper in a climate controlled garage, everything would appear new.

That said, a new stereo is ~$200-800 + $40 for a backup camera + $30 for a mounting kit and there are dozens of videos online. If you can open a box and remove 8 screws, you can do this job and save at least $1500.

Thank you. Is there anybody here that has actually done this themselves?? Rather than reinvent rhe wheel, I would like to just copy someone else's work....as far a exactly what to order and where and specifics. I don't want any gaps or anything and want it to fit like it looks factory. Thank you.

Mine sort of picked up a crack on the open road. So I claimed it under windscreen replacement insurance

This is a photo of my 2007 CLK550 DASH. I do not think the link you gave will fit this. It looks like the linked part has a slot for a CD player. Also, the buttons placement use confuses me regarding how they fit... I am just not seeing how that part fits what I have..... but I am not a pro at this stuff. I just hate to order that and it not fit. Thanks for the help.

MB’s of all kinds.
Find a OEM unit you can just install yourself. You have the NGT 2 head unit. Stay away from the aftermarket crap. It never works! Cuts out! Takes 45 seconds to load. It’s a joke really. These cars are worthless so $2,000 is about half the value of the car itself. Find a OEM unit online and save $1,500+. DIY videos are all over the internet.

I replaced my original Stereo head unit with one from Seicane; photo attached (sorry about the lighting glare. Unit fit perfectly and I'm generally happy with it. It wasn't entirely plug and play but I can help you understand the wiring. I kept the fiber optic output to the HK amp in the trunk.

Seicane Head Unit Order

Touch screen so you can see finger smudges in the camera flash.
Put in a back-up camera that integrates well with the Seicane head. The only item that's remaining is to get the steering wheel buttons to integrate. Still working with Seicane on the solution. I've attached a link to the Seicane unit and jpg of my Order page. https://www.seicane.com/mercedes-ben...o-stereo-a5776
And if you want to purchase the original head unit I removed, let me know. It looks exactly like yours but screen is fine. I saw another thread about how to get the OEM unit sync'd to your VIN.

Thank you very much for your help. That solution may work. I do not know a lot about this stuff and my expertise does not lie in this area. That said, I am handy enough with tools to maybe do this. Rather than extend this thread here and complicate things, I am sending you a private message. Thank you.

I did a full headunit swap with an alpine headunit unit. The reason it is so expensive is because it's not an easy job. The entire system functions of this fiber optic network which is literally insane. It took me four days on and off to get the whole system rewired and replaced. I had to install all new speakers, headunit and an external amp to and I used the factory speaker wiring to alleviate some of the headache of running new speaker wire to the doors. If I had to do it all over again, I would pay someone. I have the experience, but the labor portion was tough. Just my two cents.

Having replaced head units at least three times in CLKs, that's the route I'd recommend. Each time I've upgraded to Alpine mech-less head units. PAC Audio adapters allowed multifunction steering wheel features to control the head units and use the factory amps. Crutchfield supplied wiring harness adapters, so no factory wires were cut. Backup camera, phone, NAV, Android Auto/Apple Car Play with voice commands are all standard with Alpine iLX hardware. As with most things, experience eases the process. Years ago we had an article on this in The Southwest Star Magazine.
