2007 CLK350 Suspension Upgrade

Hello,

I have an 07 CLK350 that vibrates/shudders at around 60mph and when braking. Fairly certain it's the control arms and I just ordered a new kit, however I want to change the front (and possibly rear) shocks/suspension because whenever I hit a bump it's very jarring and hard. Can someone point me in the right direction to what parts I can order? I'm a novice and still learning, and don't know what needs replacing, such as the coils/spring, and the struts. Thanks in advance!

hey Jake so for our clks the strut assembly usually comes as a whole trust me you do not want to buy just the shock or spring its an added pain. I assume you have the sports suspension and I would personally like that better so I bought coilers that allow me to adjust how stiff or comfortable the ride is. But if you wanted to get the downgraded comfort suspension you would just get the strut towers as a whole and then there's a nut at the top of the tower as well as two connecting the strut to the wheel hub and is around 1-2 hours for both sides. Rear shocks are easy you just peel away the trunk liner and there's one counter hold and regular nut on top and another on the bottom end. The spring in the rear is independent so changing that is a pain because you have to compress the spring using a special compressor and then are able to safely remove this. I would look and see if you have any leaking shocks and replace the shocks themselves otherwise I would get an adjustable set of coilovers (KW, Godspeed MAXX) and install the fronts yourself and the rears at a professional. hope this helps let me know if u have any questions as I installed my coilovers myself.

Yeah, if you are admitting being a novice when it comes to working on cars, this won't be the job for you. I've had lots of experience with these types of replacements and this job I did last month on my CLK320 was the WORST I've ever done. You can read more here: https://mbworld.org/forums/clk-class...ml#post8702446

But you are correct; at this age and especially if you are noticing the shaking under braking, you should probably be replacing:
Front control arms
Upper strut bushing
Upper strut bearing
Struts
sway bar end links

The entire kit for front suspension was around $1,000 from FCP Euro. If you wanted to upgrade to factory Sport suspension, all you'd need to do is buy the Sport suspension kit and then source the Sport front sway bar and brackets.

the coilover install was actually the first thing I ever did to my car and helped me learn what holds the whole suspension together so I believe it is a pretty important job to do. The worst part is compressing the old spring that’s why I recommended getting a whole assembly. But Dave to me it sounds like he has the sports suspension and it’s too stiff for him if it was the case where his shocks were blown the ride would bounce a whole lot. And yes the shaking will stop immediately after you install the new control arms make sure to torque them under weight at ride height (jack up the strut till you see your rotors are at ride height)

only OP could confirm if he has the aport suspension already. more likely to be blown shocks on a 2007 CLK350 than it would be due to harsh ride compliance from factory Sport suspension.
