AMG Air Filters vs. K&N Air Filters...

Just consulted MB regarding this question as I am coming out of warranty and thought maybe I could "upgrade" in the air filter department too...but I guess I am glad I asked first. It would appear that K&N does have some issues with our cars. Read the email I got from MB:

"Stick with the AMG filters. The K&N filters are cleaned with an oil-based solution. We have found the residual oil that is left on the filters gets into the mass air flow sensor (regulates air/fuel mixture going into engine) and destroys it. The mass air flow sensor goes for about $600.00....not worth risking it."

Don't be afraid of the K&N'S.I've run them in every vehicle I've owned - my 97' Maxima has 173k on the clock - 140k with the K&N's.As long as you follow the directions when "oiling" I repeat "oiling" you're o.k.Just remember you "oil it" not MARINATE IT.If they were a problem or defective I wouldn't put them in my C43.

Might also consider green filters. They're just like K&Ns, except are less oily out of the box. If you with K&Ns, just make sure they're oiled correctly as already stated.

Since you replace them instead of oiling them, how long do they last between replacement intervals?

use them c-43 said it best oil them not marinate if you just put on a little oil part of the paper will still be white then wait the capillary action will draw it through the whole filter

Although I agree that proper oiling would avoid the problem, who would oil them? I too would rather replace then clean with oil. Just not worth leaving it to someone else to do. But the questions is really if anyone here can honestly say it has made a significant difference in their cars performance?

Thanks,

Learso
