crazy!my rear axle is locked help meeee
I ordered a set of 19" HRE rims to put on my 01' clk 55 and they finally came in and I took the old rims off the car and put the new HRE's on the car. I got in to drive the car gave her some gas and nothing ! the axle seems to be locked. I looked for constrictions and rubbing but found nothing wrong. The tires clear the wheel well.
I put the car in neutral to see if I could roll the car and same thing, it rolls very little forward and reverse but then locks up. If I put the car in drive, the car will not move forward, same as with the reverse.
Is it possible I somehow damaged the tranny? I did not torque the wheel lugs on with the car in the air, I tightened the lugs after the wheel was firmly planted on the ground. I used a jack under the car, not the mercedes jack and I lifted the car via the rubber grommets near the jack openings on the car.
Any immediate help greatly appreciated!!!
Check your lug bolts! You should have gotten two different sizes...the ones in the rear need to be shorter than the fronts or else they contact and can interlock with the parking brake mechanism...check it out carefully for any damage also....I had to get new ones sent to me and even then had to grind them down a bit...May be you put some of the shorter ones on the front? Check the lengths carefully...Good Luck!!!
Thanks all !
Im not sure of the lugs, but it makes sense that something is hitting since there is a little movement forward and reverse. I guess if it were the axle itself, I would have no movement. Also in neutral the car only still moves slightly forward and slightly in reverse.
I think Im screwed. Should I put the original rims back on and take to the dealership? Or does anyone know what size lugs I should get? The HRE rims are 19" 448R 19X8 front and 19X9.5 rear

Puting the stock rims back on is a chore in 110 degrees, so if there is something that Im overlooking, Id rather look at my options. If its lugs, I can go out buy the lugs and put them in without having to put the stock rims back on
Thanks
Good luck - John
They should have sent you new bolts. Then, the new ones should only go in about 4.5 turns before seating.
If it rolls but still get clicking, they're still too long.
any ideas where to get lugs fast and the size that I need for my application ?

There's is a simple way to check this. Just jack up the rear (both side) release the and brake and put the transmission in "neutral" then spin the tires. It should turn. If not, then loose u all the wheel bolt and turn them again.
so is there a correct size that I need to order? I dont think this hit and miss thing is going to be fun. I think you are right. I spent $4,500 for these rims. They should have sent me the proper lugs or offered them to me as an option.
