Well the 208 isn't a glorified C-class.....the 209 is built on a C-class chassis.
I prefer the front suspension on a 208 over the Mac strut on a 209.
As a whole I do prefer the 208 over the 209.

The w208 was a W202 based car. Same double wishbone suspension up front, same rear multi link, same steering box (gear), same just about anything. The clk was a bit stiffer due to chassis changes but the idea that its not based on a C-class is wrong.

I dont think being based on a C is a bad thing as the W202 was a great chassis. I loved my C36 to death as it was more FUN than my C32.

I just like a small 4 door over a small coupe but thats a matter of tastes.

I agree but the 208's suspension was much more elegant and more expensive to build than the 209. As you stated the C36 was more fun than the C32, not to mention better built.

The C-class can't be a bad base as the CLK-DTM is built on it and that car is seriously a world class supercar.

This post is not meant to be disrespectful of the CLK, but here are my thoughts.

We all know that the W209 CLK is basically the W203 chassis with 2 less doors and different sheet metal. In North America, the CLK class has always been priced much higher than the equivalent C-class model (eg. C350 vs CLK350, C55 AMG vs CLK55 AMG).

The price discrepancy can be quite significant. In Canada, the W203 C350 costed about $52-55000, while the W209 CLK350 costed around $65-67000.
The C55 costed about $72-74000 while the CLK55 costed around $100000.

Is the CLK worth that much more over the equivalent C-class with the same engine?

The only features I know of which the CLK has (as an option) which can't be bought on the C-class is Keyless Go, the availability of a non-AMG V8 model (CLK500/550), and the availability of a cabriolet.

Yes, the CLK comes with E-class instrument cluster and the E-class steering wheel with different design over the dashboard (but with the same centre stack as the W203 C-class). With identical chassis setup and higher weight compared to the equivalent C-class model, I doubt there is a performance advantage for the CLK.

Because of this, I personally find it hard to spend that much more money for a CLK320/350 coupe vs a C320/350 or a CLK55 coupe vs a C55, when there really isn't that much more to the CLK car (other than the 2 door coupe shape). For some, I'm sure the beautiful shape alone of the 2 door CLK coupe IS worth the extra bucks.

I am not quite sure what Zorro's point is?
He is upset about platform engineering?
The CLK is based on the C class. OK
The W208 AMG CLK55 is a vastly modified vehicle.
Lets start with: engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, interior, wheels and tires, computer and programming, on and on.
The E55 is based on the E class. The SLK55 is based on the SLK. The S55 is based on the S class. ON and ON.

The BMW M3 is based on the 3 series. The BMW M5 is based on the 5 series.
Etc. Etc. Etc.

The Jaguar X type is built on a Ford Mondeo.
Its called platform engineering.
To discount ANY AMG built car because of what it is based on in simply rediculous.
No name calling. No insults.
Just do your research before you make statements.

Of course the W208 CLK is based on the W202 chassis. Zero dispute there.

He just wanted to show us "lowly" CLK/ML owners how much better he is than us....same goes for the "american made minivan" comment, referring to mbenzman's ML55, which some have already posted about.

Thing I can't figure out is that his family has owned a CLK430 and an ML. Since he's acquired his Porsche, perhaps he's too good to mix it up anymore with the RIFF RAFF?

Perhaps I'm just disappointed. He's been 'around' both here and on mercedes-shop for several years (I've even answered a bunch of his questions when we was shopping for a W210 E55). Back then, he actually showed respect to other members, without coming off as a know-it-all. Where does the hate come from?

I LIKE IT HERE (on MBWorld). I've met a lot of friends and shared some laughs in person and online....but this is different. I felt I had to "say something" this time....

I'm perfectly happy driving my glorified C-Class.

Just like I enjoyed my VW 944 turbo.. the most fun I ever had in a VW .. in many ways =)

well definitely wrong, but it's not the first time we've seen it
don't you love those people that just got their first MB AMG and think they know it all or better and faster than anyone on the planet? ;p same goes for those people, just pathetic comments

hmmm once upon a time, there was this place called mbworld, where people would share info on their cars, on mods, lots of pics, lots of diy stuff, with the biggest drama being a troll from bimmer boards stoping by saying he'll take eveyone in the twisties...... but now? lots of hate

Eff, you people have no concept of context. In the ORIGINAL thread, not a whiney "woe is me, people hate on us" regurgitation, I was simply snapping back at an idiot that was personally (not vehicularily lol) attacking me. I have owned a W208 and my opinions are my own. Get a grip, I never once bragged about money or insulted people. You guys make me laugh. Hard.

Subscribing.
FYI. Here is an original insult to my name when presented with information that conflicted with what was being spewed forth as "fact" by you. You simply could not take that fact being pointed out! You keep exercising your rights to attack me & keep up the good work there son. Did you "get me" yet as you said you were trying to do?

You are not even making sense. Did you READ this thread? All I am saying is that big companies that research, DESIGN and take the time to do all the marketing, spend all the money to create new and better wheels..they are the ones to support, not the little fv(kers that rip off ideas and try to sell them as their own. HOW are AMG wheels not their own design?? Because Ronal makes them? For an "MBENZMAN" you sure don't know a whole lot about the process...
