C208 55 AMG... should i get one?

Found some with low miles ~35k, MY2001 mainly. Should I get it? What kind of issues should I look for/have you guys experienced? Looking to buy in a couple of months.

The instrument cluster is an issue for virtually all 208 and 210 cars (not just AMGs). I've also had the rear hat tray replaced under warranty on my car. A.M. radio signals can be a weak point due to the antenna being in the rear glass.

Assuming you find a clean example, the engine and transmission are very robust. Take care of it and change fluids at regular intervals. Have a thorough PPI done before any purchase and make sure there are complete service records.

The miles look very good.......does the car have an extended warranty? What is the asking price?

Thumbs up

Ditto to what Chappy said. He and I have W208s and love them. Both of ours sit on European AMG springs. They transform the car. Don't believe your dealer when thay say they don't exist, they do.

Owen,

Rich and I found another mod that is inexpensive and should be worthwhile. Rich has ordered a set and I'm going to today....urethane lower control arm bushing...should clean up any slop or minor vibrations experienced (we hope). The rubber bushings are simply not up to the task.

Even with new tires, I've experienced some occasional vibration up front. After bending Rich's ear for hours, we looked into sourcing these or even having some custom made. Thanks to the guys over on 202 club forums, I found a source in California that sells them for just $50 per side. Install, of course, will be extra. I'm having these done before SS brake lines as this should help in all driving situations, not just at the track.

I ordered my set this morning on ebay from LPD Auto Parts in Duarte, CA. Since our lower control arms are identical to the 202s, this makes a perfect fit for our application. I wanted to have them installed prior to our AMG Track Day next month.

Here's a snippet:

"Hello everyone!

My name is Tom, I am the seller of the lower control arm bushings you see posted on ebay.

I want to give you guys a little background about me, our company, and let you guys know a little bit about what we are all about.

LPD Auto Parts has been in the automotive business for over 15 years. We are located in Duarte, California and sell new and used auto parts. We have been specializing in Mercedes parts now for over 5 years. We are indeed a dismantling yard, but we see ourselves as so much more. We carry hundreds of Mercedes of all makes, models and years. Our technicians are specially trained to work on Mercedes Benz's as well as other cars.

The 202 lower control arm bushings have been developed due to the high demand from our customers for complete lower control arms that just needed bushing replacements.

We work in conjunction with a special manufacturer that ONLY specializes in polyurethane bushing replacements. We have developed bushings for BMW's, Lexus, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and now Mercedes.

We have dealer contracts and until now have only offered bushings to commercial industries. We are in the process of growing, utilizing the internet as our stepping stone. We have a webpage currently in development and will be continuing our services to the internet public.

LPD carries a variety of used OEM parts for the 202, and of course these bushings.

If anyone has ANY questions regarding us as a company, our products, parts requests please let me know as I will be your main contact.

For faster response please email us.

Thanks,
Tom

Note: These links are over two years old, so these bushings are nothing new, just not widely publicized for the 208 application.

Yes, that is my understanding. They would work on all W208 CLK 320, 430, 55 as well as the W202 C-class cars (C43, C36, C280, C220 et. al.)

Mine were ordered today and I'm hedging my bet that this will 'cure' the slight shimmy I sometimes get at 60mph.

EDIT: Apologies to Kar doc for getting so far off topic.

Well to keep this on track I love my 55 and would give it a huge . I also shortly after buying had one of the numbers on the dash clock go south but I understand it is just the connection. Remove and clean contact and replace is what I need to do. Just need to figure out how to get the dash out.

Now to keep the off topic train of thought... The only thing my prebuy inspection saw was lower control arms are starting to tear is that the same part?

Mbenzman is installing them for me, along with the SS brake lines. Both came in the mail yesterday.
