W208 or W209 amg?

I currently drive a w208 clk320, and i'm thinking of upgrading into an amg.

Not sure if i should get a w208 or w209.

I think the w208 looks better, and i'm probably going to get the w208. Just wanted to know what you guys think.

Any input would be helpful.

The performance is the same on both cars so if you like the W208 better go for it. It's cheaper & I imagine it won't have the same drop in depreciation as the W209 once the new CLK comes out.

Only true test is the test drive. Drive both of them...if possible. Thats the only way you will know. Don't bother with what we have to say. We are all biased. Only thing that always holds true is that you can't go wrong with an AMG....W208 or W209.

If I already had a W208, I'd go for a W209 - something completely different.

Just my 2 cents.

The 208 is getting old and with the newer CLK coming out the 208 is gonna be ancient.

I have total respect for the 208 and love it but when its 2 generations behind its kind of hard to justify it over the 209 (unless price is a major issue). Plus the 209 has the pillarless design and it looks real hot when all the windows are down. But, since you like the look of the 208 best, why not go for it?

208 is classic. I'd take that over the new CLK anyday. Whether that day was today, 1999, or 10 years from now. It just looks so much better. Thats just my opinion though. And I'm obviously biased. Just like I'd take a W124 500E over a W210 500E

Personally I think the 209 is light years ahead of the 208 in terms of styling (especially interior)...the rear end is also much better looking on the 209. Front end is subjective, the 208 has the advantage of using the E-class headlights where the 209 uses C-class.

However, if you put a 209 next to a newer SL they really look like a Jr and Sr

If I understand correctly 209's drive train has much improvements over 208 which had the same drive train (suspension and steering) as the E class.

I think 208 looks much more agressive outside but, 209s interior is hands down a winner. Plus the pillarless windows are just amazing, and a head turner (may times I get thumbs up from people when stuck in traffic )

Good luck on your choice but looks like you cant go wrong.

............A lot of this is subjective. The essential point is that unlike other chasis changes, the change from W208 to W209 is one in which there was to major leap in improvement. This fact represents part of my thesis that MB has treated the CLk like an unloved step child. I think all will agree with this regardless of if you prefer the W208 or W209. Therefore from my point of view, there is nothing to be gained by the extra cost of of buying a W209 CLk55 when the W208 CLk55's can be had for under $25K

Ted

thanks for all your input.

i actually went with a w208 clk55.

it had only 20,000 miles, and with 3yr warranty(from MB) it cost me 35K. More than i wanted to pay, but just loved it when i seen it.

i'll post picture later.

$35K for a W208? What year is it? I'd be lucky to get that for my car. Is that right? I know the miles are super low but still seems high to me.
Either way congrats and post those pics.

Its probably a couple of thousands more than i expected to pay, but i do have 3yrs warranty.

right now its probably hard to find a 2002 clk amg with low mileage in great condition.

btw, what kind of mods do you guys have in your amg. i hear that LSD is a must.

I paid only about $3k less for my '01 about a yr ago w/ similar mileage & 2 yrs of warranty from MB (which has paid for itself numerous times actually).

When I was looking, the only thing in the same price range were ratty C32s - there were no $30k+ W209 CLK55s. Things sure have changed in one year!

Anyway, post pictures when you get a chance!

A limited slip would be nice, but I'd go over the car's fluids.

Yep. I've got just under 35K miles on mine with 2 years left on the factory extended warranty. Buyers want that extra protection IMO.

I'm very tempted by the LSD....but haven't pulled the trigger yet. My other mods are mostly cosmetic, except for the euro springs and 18" Monoblocks.

ha ha, I would take a ratty C32 any day....

anyway, I prefer the W209 because it shares the same chassis, interior and most of the body style as my CL203 Coupe !
