Why would you consistently call your car a "CLK 500 Sport" if people only see it as a MB? And as for your statement about the orphans... They have the motor they only lack the builder plaque.

 

I think it would be an excellent car for daily use. It is not a AMG but certainly a reasonable performer for those who want something between regular and AMG.

You completely and utterly, without exception, can not compare a motorcycle to a car. Period. My bike is faster then 90% of cars and probably 75% of bikes. By car standards, it's a rocket. By sport bike standards, it's "meh."(2006 Street rod V-Rod)

Sure. A 5.0 with aftermarket exhaust and 5.4 with identical exhaust will sound nearly identical. They aren't different engine families, different firing order, etc. But stock for stock, absolutely. AMG buyers WANT an aggressive tone. A clk500 buyer wants a fast-ish Benz.
Sooo you are more worried about what other people think about your car, then enjoying it everyday, is that what you're saying? Sadly, the public's opinion doesn't physically change your car. Your car, objectively, is what it is. Neither little Jimmy down the lane, nor your supervisor, can change that with their opinion.

Look, everyone has a different opinion of fast, and usually what's fast to you one day, is slow 6 months later. But when a performance enthusiest pulls his CLK55 up to the drag strip, does a few "around the block a few times" tricks(drops rear tire psi 5lbs, leaves hood open till he lines up, etc) and runs a 13.0, then a poser with a "CLK500 AMG" rolls up saying his car is 95% AMG and runs a 14.0 well... there's your answer.

Then when you two take the fun, twisty way home, and he runs away from you because
A)Your sport suspension odds are isn't 100% AMG spec, thus he corners slightly better
B)He's braking later and harder due to those brakes the public doesn't notice
C)He's pulling out of the corners faster... because he's just plain faster
Well... there's the rest of your answer.

So to answer your question, why do(most) people buy AMG's when they could get the same look for half the price? Because it's not about putting on a display for everyone else, it's about me enjoying the car, and I enjoy going fast, while not in a stripped out car. The 500 is just not enough car for me.

I need a "family car" but there's no need to give up performance too nowadays. I've narrowed my choices down to a 6.0 GTO or C/CLK55. Why? Because they both offer space, and speed. I literally don't care about the AMG badge, nor if the GTO was called the Tampon. They both offer the level of performance I'm looking for in a car.

Spotted this on the MBWorld forum, have strong suspicion it is an E320 CDI

 

These are the ones I really don't get. Nice car, nice appearance mods, but it isn't an AMG. Why not just debadge it and be done with it?

Guy that lives across the street from my kids school has a clean C300 sport and an MB flag and various posters. Every other day he's outside when I arrive to pull into the school in one of my C43's, staring me down for some reason. Two weeks later had an AMG badge on his car. On one hand, yeah cool another C class fan. But on the other I just get a little sad. I feel like a douche, but still just want to tell him he's not fooling anyone and diluting the AMG name. Gorgeous C300, though.
