Well..quite a few of these "posers" are coming from used dealers slapping the badge on. Seen it first hand, even saw a white CLS 550 sold used from an MB dealer with the AMG badge on the back to a customer. I was dying to tell her about the badge.

Just saying.

I wonder if these people are paying AMG prices for these cars? It must make for some confusion when they call their insurance company to cover their CLS550 AMG and the insurance company can't find that model.

W209 2003 CLK55 Coupe
Not long ago, I went to the MBZ dealer to drop my CLK55 Coupe off for service, and I pulled into the service drive behind a brand new shiny C230 AMG. Of course, my camera and cell phone were at home, so I couldn't take a photo of it.
The owner spotted the AMG lettering on the front calipers, and remarked "I see you have an AMG too".
My reply was short, and to the point: "No, I have an AMG". You are a poser! His eyebrows raised up, as I explained to him that his VIN would not get him into the AMG Lounge, but mine does. I showed him the signature badge on the engine, and asked to see his. He quipped that his is an AMG because the trunk badge says so. He had never heard of a poser.

The service writer very diplomatically explained to him that the only thing AMG about his car was the badge. He finally admitted that he bought the badge at the parts department.

"AMG" badge, $30... "AMG" t-shirt, $27... "AMG" hat $29.

Getting busted by someone who actually knows what AMG is .... PRICELESS.

Saw a 2005 SL500 at a dealership in Canada with an AMG badge. It had the AMG appearance package, but I did not know they made an SL500 AMG.

I wonder about that at times myself, I hope not. The things I have seen and heard of going on at dealerships..nuts. Quite a few people have no idea what an AMG is or the difference of NA and AMG, so who knows?

damn, now you guys have made me so self conscious of putting AMG on my car that I decided to do NO text on my AMG calipers, there naked

I think I might just do the AMG text anyway, I think it's the only thing that's going to look appropriate

New, old Mercedes and REAL AMG's.
So here is my dilema:

There is this very nice gugy, and Mercedes fanatic who is a member of our local Mercedes Club.

He drives an absolutely gorgeous SL550, on which he (I assume) slapped the AMG badge on.

He bleeds Mercedes and he swears he drives an AMG to the point that other Club members, non familiar with what an AMG is, also compliment him on his beautiful "AMG Convertible" (did I say the car is beautiful?)

In any case, I thought I would never say anything to him about it, as he is a very good dude indeed; but GOD I clinch when even on the Club's magazine they post pictures of me and him under the title: "MercsDude, John Doe and their beautiful AMG's"

Should I just live with it and deal with the clinching I get everytime he says "my AMG this or that"? Should I just speak to him man to man? Am I being a dick for considering crushing one man's heart?

Am I just being A LITTLE ***** for even worrying about this?!

Just ask him why he put an amg label on a non amg car. If he swears that it's an amg, just send him to the amg lounge and see if his vin lets him enter....or this thread. He probably doesn't even realize that he's a poser. Saying that, he'll probably never speak to you again.

Like I've already mentioned, there are MB dealerships worldwide that market the AMG appearance packages as cars being AMG cars. That practice is unscrupulous but it happens whether we like it or not. Money talks. The rest walks. I brought the issue up with my local dealership where there are V12 CLs, SLs and S Classes with the AMG badge. They don't give two ****s what some forum thinks. All they care is selling cars. Very expensive cars that cost more than a Black Series. And MB USA doesn't care either if dealerships that sell many cars do that. Sure, there are many posers that add the badge, but there are innocent buyers with badges on the cars they purchase.

Those innocents probably wonder "WTH?!" when their VIN is run for registration or insurance purposes.

I don't understand what the big deal is with putting a badge on your car. Clearly they're posers and it's kind of funny but having an 80 page thread on it says quite a bit about the community here, especially when it's mostly the only active thread in this forum. What's next...taking off AMG stickers off AMG parts if your car is not 100% AMG? It's a little ridiculous.

If you ask me, having an AMG body kit or the AMG package or whatever gives you enough right to put any badge you want on your car. A lot of manufacturers do that. I don't see why Merc would be any different. It's also funny that a lot of car enthusiasts prefer to debadge their cars...as opposed to discussing badges over and over again on a forum.

So a slight modification of the above. At the next meet, bring up the subject of the AMG lounge and how you find it useful and others should consider joining. Ask the SL550 guy at the following meeting if he joined.

Another idea. If his car is an R230, instead of the new R231s, suggest he remove the "0" from SL550.

If a person completely modifies the car with all the AMG components including engine then maybe you could badge it an AMG. Of course, buying a real AMG would be much cheaper.

Missed the point on the first part.

Agree on the second part. People who do not have anything to proof debadge their cars (painted mine black, to blend with the rest of the car in my case).

I also agree that everyone is welcome to do whatever they want to their own cars. On the same token people should be able to call out posers if they feel like it.

The fact that this is such a popular thread is a testament to posers' efforts to justify their posiness. Had they stopped trying to defend themselves, this thread would have died a hundred pages ago.
