They aren't fooling anyone with their tiny little front brake calipers anyway. I tend to call these guys out (especially if they have a female with them) . I'll say "nice car, is your watch a knockoff too?"

Yep, some people do a quad exhaust, some get the bodykit, some get the wheels. I have never ever seen anyone get the appropriate brakes. Always seems to be the most accurate way to tell for those who try a bit harder than just the badge. If you can drop $3-5k for brakes then you can probably just buy the AMG.
I am the 2nd owner of my car... it is not an AMG its an AMG sport however they decided to swap the fender emblems and put 3.2 amg badges looked good but i had to debadge em... my motor aint AMG so why front? i do have some AMG parts but i dont feel i should badge my car as such
AMG Sport is when Mercedes takes some of the sizzly bits from AMG and makes them available on a sport version the base car.
Much like BMW is doing with M power versions, Dodge is doing with SRT, Ford has done for years with SVT, and pretty much every marketing wonk does any time they get access to a secret sauce that when sprinkled on the product they have to sell produces added margin.
The problem is that any secret sauce has to be used judiciously... so as not to saturate the market and dilute it's value. It most certainly can be managed... but let's be honest.. corporate marketing wonks tend to only see the $ they can grab today... and they usually suck at any kind of at long term thinking or delayed gratification. If they didn't, they wouldn't have ended up in sales and marketing in the first place.

once Mercedes started selling C and E sports that have pretty much all of the outward sizzly bits, it really dilutes the value of the AMG brand. They absolutely should not make the sport packages quite as sizzly as the full on AMG.
Living in NYC I see lots of nice cars... not the exotics you see in socal or miami... but the bread and butter stuff. I can still see an M3/4/5/6 and know right away it's an M from 500ft away. I see an AMG and I can't tell its not just the base car with the sport trim until I'm close enough to see the badges.

Generally-speaking, the same is true for the prospective buyers of the watered-down models: They want all of the face value (gratification) of owning the top model, but seem to lack the ambition to earn them.
And that, I think, is the real meaning behind this thread. The adage "fake it, till you make it" has some merit, but these folks forgot to read the second half of the saying. And thus, everyone else who earned the brand rightfully is given a lower perceived value and prestige.
But in the end, we're merely the consumers, so unless we choose to buy other brands, or not buy the Faux AMG/AMG Lite, there's little else we can do but shout from a soapbox.
I left all of the badging off of my car after I painted it . I was sitting in the car waiting for Chick Fil A to bring my food out A group of girls was walking past and one commented that she liked the car . The other girl responded "me too, and that's a AMG too , they are. Real fast". I had to laugh , these kids couldn't have been more than 13 years old but the girl knew it was a AMG even without badging . She was definitely a "car girl".

Huge dilution in the last 3-5 years.
Anyone who has a real AMG does not care if someone has to "get close" to tell if it's an AMG. I enjoy driving the car because it performs (and looks ) like a real AMG.
I don't even want to get into M3 posers and their "dilution". This thread has been around for a very long time because of the "AMG want to be posers" and the humor of them trying to make their cars into something other than they are.

"Anyone who has a real AMG"? Really? You presume to speak to every person who has ever bought a real AMG? I guarantee that is not true for everyone. And I really doubt it's true even for "most".
I bought a CLK63 because it's almost invisible. So I, at the time, preferred if someone had to get close to tell, if they could tell at all. And yet, I do like that a CLK500 looks immediately different. Subtly. But clearly.
As I see C and E cars everywhere, and can't tell them from a C63 or E63 from a distance... I wonder if I'd buy one now. Sure they run better and drive better.
But there is definitely _something_ to the car looking the part too.

Yeah, these are the same douche bags that wave their fake Rolex around while they drive . Some people are true *** Clowns .

I guess that some people must really care what others think of them and their car.
Apologies if I am totally lost here (wouldn't be the first time), but I seem to see a cavernous disconnect.
How does this statement: "I bought a CLK63 because it's almost invisible." lead to the following retort?
"I guess that some people must really care what others think of them and their car."
I was referring to his statement "As I see C and E cars everywhere, and can't tell them from a C63 or E63 from a distance... I wonder if I'd buy one now. Sure they run better and drive better.
If I am reading it correctly, he seems to say that he would give up the "run better and drive better" because you can't tell a c63 or E63 from a distance.
Let's (me included), get back to the original intent of this great thread (started in 2007/250,00 views) and keep posting the posers out there.

Okay. I have a quick story only, no pics, because, I am clearly not fast enough with my phone. (Maybe hyp could give me some tips).
There is a rare SL500 AMG I have seen around town. It even has the "V8 Kompressor" badge on the side, single tip exhaust though. I have never had a chance to get a photo (see above). The other day, I roll up to the front of the line at a red light and as I pass a panel van in the other lane, that SL comes into view. I flip for my phone as the light turns green and then thought "I know, I will show him what a real kompressor sounds like." Well, things didn't turn out so good. He turns right about a 1/2 block down so I didn't get a pic and I was driving my ML. Dammit! I will get a pic one of these days.
