w208 Top Speed Delimited?

Does anyone have experience knowing where the w208 CLK55 tops out w/ the ECU speed limiter removed? I was guessing it would hit somewhere in the 180 mph range or so, but not really sure.

Edit: ghetto calculations in excel say ~205 mph. But that doesn't include increased speed/drag effects, so it's not accurate. So anyone with a trial run?

Quoted from an earlier post, a long time ago in a galaxy far away:

Here you go.

You need three things: rolling resistance, air resistance, and rear wheel horsepower (and, of course, the gearing to get there, which was addressed previously).

Rolling resistance: 3450 pounds*0.013 = 44.85 pounds (edit: yeah, I know, forgot to include the weight of driver!! Re-ran using 150 pound driver, and it changed it to 295 rwhp in case anyone cares...)

Air resistance: calculated frontal area (based upon 67.8" width, 54" height) is 20.3 ft^2 . Car's Cd = 0.31 .

So, to go 185 mph, the car would meet an air resistance of 20.3 ft^2*0.31* 0.00256 x (185)^2 = 551.37 pounds.

So then required bhp to go 185 is (551.37 + 44.85)*185/375 = 596.22*185/375 = 294 rear wheel horsepower.

CLK55s usually dyno out at 290-295 rwhp. So, it calculates out to hit 185, with drag, frontal area, and rolling resistance factored in.

I'm so impressed with the details

For the record, I do *not* condone driving at speeds like this anywhere except the track. The reason I'm curious is because the newer vehicles have 6-7 and even 8 spd automatic transmissions, and the final gear ratio is a little lower. So I'm curious at what our car can do w/ its factory setup with no regulation as compared to newer vehicles with lower final gear ratios.

I have got up to 262 km/hour on the Autobahn - car was still accelerating nicely but traffic then slowed me down. It is not that easy to really open it up in Germany - but sooner or later I will let you know....

Excellent info. And take it from me your calc's are pretty darn accurate if you know what I mean

How difficult is it to de-limit a W209?
Can anyone describe the process?

Your ECU will need to be flashed with another program. Any reputable aftermarket tuner can do this for you.

If you're in Europe, AMG can do this for you too.

You dont take gearing into consideration? I know the CLK55 is geared to go faster than 185mph so I guess it's not necessary to consider it in this case. I don't know how fast my car goes. Just know it gets to the 160mph on the cluster and is still pulling pretty good.

How fast is the CLK55 geared for top speed?

gearing wise its limited to roughly 180-185... however if you get the 6400rpm redline, you may be able to squeeze out a bit more but honestly its tough to say without actually doing in (at a safe testing facility of course).

Depends on tire and redline. With a 265 35 18 tire and 6000rpm redline it gears out at 193mph. Give me your rear tire diameter and redline and I will tell you (as long as your trans and diff gearing is still stock; I can adjust accordingly if you've made other changes)

Also keep in mind, at higher speeds the speedo accuracy margin of error increases so you would need a high quality GPS based performance meter to get a truly accurate number.

265-35-18s, my redline is still stock - what is that 6200?

Update: I watched a vid on youtube of a stock W208 CLK55 doing an indicated 291kph on the autobahn. That's a smidge over 180mph.

How was the vehicle stability at that speed?
