W208 Brake upgrades ???

Hey everyone
Has anyone converterd their W208 brakes? Im close to rotor replacement and noticed a big price diffrence between the 208 & 209. Plus the 209 has much nicer calipers. Just throwing it out to see if anyone has upgraded or found a nice easy interchange

Are you asking if someone upgraded to W209 brakes? I upgraded to Brembo GT BBK in the front and love it

Yea thats what I meant. Has anyone switched to 209 or a similar setup.
Was your Brembo a direct bolt on or was there adapters involved?

If you want to really upgrade your brakes on a budget simply get a nice set of performance brake pads and a set of stainless steel lines with super blue brake fluid. That alone will do a great deal and also reduce the dust significantly (Hawk HPS give off virtually no dust and are a great street pad, Axxis Ultimate's give off significantly more dust). The weight reduction is also a great way to improve braking performance. The most important upgrade of all though is probably good grippy wide tires. The better the grip, the less you will get into ABS and the better your car will be able to stop in most conditions. I'd recommend Dunlap Direzza Z1 star specs.

Thanks AMS,
Yea Im thinking price and apearance. The AMG 208 calipers stop nice but look horrible comapaired to the 209. But I still like the look of a big red or yellow Brembo peeking around the wheel..

Yup, The W208 CLk55 AMG brakes are already ridiculous overkill so there is no need whatsoever to upgrade the hardware. It just requires some basic pad & lines upgrades. Tires also make a difference as well, the better the tires grip under extreme breaking the better the brakes can do their job. You have a great setup rsr911, stick with it, all you really have to do is upgrade to an extreme summer tire to extract the max braking potential.

I just found a post on another MB forum...
It was talking about a W171 SLK55 setup bolting directly on a W210 AMG.
Does anyone have any info if it will be a direct bolt on to a W208 AMG ??

A mechanic tried bolting on the SLK 55 performance package AMG brakes on to my 208 and it was a no go. Fortunately I didn't have to buy the brakes first!

You're going to have to drop some cash if you want "pretty" brakes. Money-no-object, I'd look hard at the Alcon setup (formerly used by Renntech) and was the upgrade on the Brabus package IIRC.

You will also need to run 18s for most larger brake packages.

Again, the W208 does not need bigger/better brakes, the brakes are already overkill from the factory. The problem is in your tires/pads/lines. Addressing those 3 will drastically improve your braking efficiency & performance. BBK kits for this car are a total waste of money, save that money for power.

He wants more attractive looking brakes. What if he's going to show his car?

Calipers are not meant for bling they are meant for STOP!!!
If you want bling on your calipers have them chrome plated.
Jeesh get a Honda!

Gizzo,
Actually if you look at our factory calipers they were made by ATE and have the AMG logo cast in them. The surface is a little rough and the AMG sticker may not adhere to it well. You might be able to paint them in high temp paint and the paint the AMG logo in black. The high temp paint is pretty tough stuff should not chip or crack if prep is done correctly.

Another option is to have them powder coated.
Just my .02.

sorry for the mood before!

Do you think that by powdercoating the brake calipers there might be an excessive heat issue?? I only say this because doesn't powdercoat retain heat not dissipate heat?? Just a question cause I want to have mine powdercoated also..

The friction between the rotor and the pad heats the pads. The hot pad heats the pistons in the calipers. The hot caliper pistons heat the fluid. You didn’t hear this from me but some people use aftermarket backing plates that sit between the pads and pistons. Backing plates that don’t transmit heat very well. Guess what doesn’t get so hot then? Of course, that just exposes the next weak link in the war against overheating brakes on track day. I may not be able to outrun some down the straights, but late braking, age, and treachery keeps me in their mirror, and when THEIR BRAKES FADE . . . . . . . . . .

Do not Paint the calipers.... POWDERCOAT them. Paint gets ugly real fast, powdercoat should last the life of the braking system. They can withstand tremendous heat (as Brembo, Porsche among many have proven). But in order to powdercoat, you have to completely disassemble the calipers (which is a huge pain). Just stick with stock look and be happy

I have an 01 CLK55 and the brakes were great at the track and they never faded. That being said, the original rotors warped by the end of the track session and I had to replace them with some front slotted and cross drilled ones. However, this is a temporary fix as my next purchase will be a BBK for the front. Basically, at the track, if you can carry more speed into a corner the faster you can go since our cars can really move due to the incredible HP and TQ. I realize not many people take their car to the track so this may not apply but thought I would add 2 cents.

As mentioned above, I agree that SS brake lines and some better brake fluid can also improve the performance of the factor brakes.

Im running 209 CLK55 brake up front and 171 SLK55 out back on my 210 E55. I love them, they look awesome, cheaper parts, and are way lighter. The rear backing plate needed a little trim to clear the big brakes out back.
