02 CLK55 temp display ?
The short answer is, send the cluster out to be rebuilt. Don’t start, or drive the car with the cluster out, or you may have regrets. These guys rebuild them. I’ve never used them personally, but many others have.

The technical answer is the there are three ribbon cables (flexible printed circuit) that are used to connect the TFTs (thin film transistor liquid crystal displays- the two side displays and the center). The center TFT appears to use a ribbon cable with copper foil in it. If my guess is correct, the two side TFTs drop pixels/fail because they appear use ribbons with aluminum in them. There is a foam rubber piece that holds the side ribbons in place. The foam deteriorates. This allows the ribbons to vibrate, which causes them to break (short) and the pixels stop illuminating. If you are really good, you can use a conductive pen to redraw the bad section(s) and replace the foam (replacing the foam requires very little talent).
Of course, you could just try replacing the foam and seeing how that works.
Great to here it can be taken apart and repaired. I can do that, no problem.
