CLK & GL
I'm not trying to start an arguement and say that the amg is or isn't worth it, but the suspension issue I addressed when I said save 2g's and get coilovers and a quad exhaust. I agree that the 55 is the better handling. Out of personal experience I have raced 2 clk55's and beat both by about 2cars(give or take a 1/2 car length). Exhaust wise, yes you do get a better note with the amg but I have my secondary cats and resonators removed an I have gotten many compliments on the sound even by 55amg owners. If the exhaust note is what will make the decision for the starter of this thread, then I agree he should get the 55. The 550 is the better car to get in my personal opinion

not all w209 clk55AMG came with larger brakes... quad exhaust mod will run around 700 bucks. Springs $400, Black Series Sway bars $300.

Anyways, I don't think you will be disappointed with either cars and the 550 got better mileage. white will def turn heads more. Good luck !
I agree, you won't be disappointed with either cars. But as far as the better interior? I'm not sure that applies to all 550's, i got a two-done (designo) interior which is far superior than the 55's i've seen, and i swapped out my springs/shocks for KW V2's. If you're gonna keep the car stock get the 55, you'll be happy.

to address the bod roll = KW V2's. The 55 will NOT be quicker than a 550...15hp difference + 15tq. If i could have gotten a CLK55 with the same options as my 550 -Mocha Black W/Moca interior, Keyless go and etc i might have, but since i couldnt find any the power + newness of the 550 sold me

+1, you can get a aftermarket exhaust and get more power + better sounds

Both great cars, but the suspension in BOTH is very similar (and not in a good way!). If you compare the thickness/stiffness of the AMG sway bars for example, they are minimally different from "stock". And compared to any other aftermarket sways (Brabus, Eibach, H&R etc), they are thinner by a significant margin (search and you will find the data).
Again, both great cars, but BOTH need a suspension upgrade in the worst way IMHO.

If you are happy with it, then that is great! Saves you the trouble and expense of messing with aftermarket parts.
I'm just trying to make the point that you are not getting a significant performance upgrade in terms of suspension by going the AMG route here.
To put it another way, I could never imagine someone with a CLK550 spending the money to change their shocks, springs and sways for the AMG versions. The differences are just too minimal to even make it a consideration.

2001 CLK 55 AMG.......... 2001 Corvette Z06.........
eh depends on what u want out of it. If you like the feeling of exclusivity, badging and superior handling go AMG. If you want better value and more straightline go 550. simple.

No need to fight about it. We're lucky enough to have many variant's of the clk from W209 - W208 to amg and non AMG..... cool thing with MB and AMG they seem to pump out something newer/better every year which makes the older model depreciate sooooo fast and avail for a good price.

I do find it a bit cheeky to post up in the AMG section about how much better a NON-amg product is...... if you're stuff is soo great you should not need validation like this. Just get out and drive and enjoy. Don't hassle the amg boys
