CLK & GL
I'm not trying to start an arguement and say that the amg is or isn't worth it, but the suspension issue I addressed when I said save 2g's and get coilovers and a quad exhaust. I agree that the 55 is the better handling. Out of personal experience I have raced 2 clk55's and beat both by about 2cars(give or take a 1/2 car length). Exhaust wise, yes you do get a better note with the amg but I have my secondary cats and resonators removed an I have gotten many compliments on the sound even by 55amg owners. If the exhaust note is what will make the decision for the starter of this thread, then I agree he should get the 55. The 550 is the better car to get in my personal opinion

I dont know where youre getting your information from but amg is the better handling car. The suspension is much stiffer and theres less body roll when you take a quick turn. You can tell the difference between the ride, its like night and day. The 550 only has 15hp more than the amg but the amg is still going to be slightly quicker. It all depends what you are looking for, updated looks with a smoother luxury ride or an amg with a stiffer/sportier suspension, amg exhaust and bigger brakes

Sorry to say that but the white 55 is a hell of a lot better looking than the 550. Been there and chose the 55 because of the deal I got. You've got big brakes, better interior, forged internals, quad exhaust, sport suspension nicer tail lights. It's a real AMG.
Anyways, I don't think you will be disappointed with either cars and the 550 got better mileage. white will def turn heads more. Good luck !

clk 500 (wifey's); 350Z roadster (daily driver); 350Z coupe (track car)
Again, both great cars, but BOTH need a suspension upgrade in the worst way IMHO.

Both great cars, but the suspension in BOTH is very similar (and not in a good way!). If you compare the thickness/stiffness of the AMG sway bars for example, they are minimally different from "stock". And compared to any other aftermarket sways (Brabus, Eibach, H&R etc), they are thinner by a significant margin (search and you will find the data).
Again, both great cars, but BOTH need a suspension upgrade in the worst way IMHO.

If you are happy with it, then that is great! Saves you the trouble and expense of messing with aftermarket parts.
I'm just trying to make the point that you are not getting a significant performance upgrade in terms of suspension by going the AMG route here.
To put it another way, I could never imagine someone with a CLK550 spending the money to change their shocks, springs and sways for the AMG versions. The differences are just too minimal to even make it a consideration.

eh depends on what u want out of it. If you like the feeling of exclusivity, badging and superior handling go AMG. If you want better value and more straightline go 550. simple.

No need to fight about it. We're lucky enough to have many variant's of the clk from W209 - W208 to amg and non AMG..... cool thing with MB and AMG they seem to pump out something newer/better every year which makes the older model depreciate sooooo fast and avail for a good price.
I do find it a bit cheeky to post up in the AMG section about how much better a NON-amg product is...... if you're stuff is soo great you should not need validation like this. Just get out and drive and enjoy. Don't hassle the amg boys
