W208 exhaust for a better sound?

Just getting a feel out there for options for an exhaust or mod for my CLK 430 to give it a more "throaty" sound. I've seen some very expensive overhauls done with the big name exhaust companies - my car is in otherwise perfect shape, so I'm not all about spending exorbitant amounts of cash to fix something which isn't even broken. Having said that, any ideas for:

1) Enhanced sound without breaking the bank?
2) A little, or a lot more "umph" (throaty/manly/whatever you want to call it) sound when idling/acceleration, without sounding like a ricer/honda/acura/etc?

I've heard various quick fixes involving removing the resonator, piping straight through, etc. Thoughts?

(FYI - though local emissions are tested, I'm in Chicago, not California where such mods might be a bit more difficult)

You can go with a single in and single out. Would be an easy install. Prolly cost 200 installed.

BTW, when doing something like this, any risk of royally botching engine performance, triggering warning lights, etc? I can't imagine so, but the cost to re-do to cure a fault can sometimes trigger regret/buyer's remorse.

From a muffler swap? Nothing causing mechanical failure, but depending on the muffler choice it could cause you to lose afew hp. You should be fine with a magnaflow.

I've heard good things about replacing the resonator with a straight pipe. It's cheap, so maybe worth a try, and you can always put it back on if you're not happy.

+1, replace the resonator with a y pipe (2 into 1 from headers to muffler) and add a magnaflow muffler.

muffler is $150, y pipe $40, labor maybe $100-200.

So I narrowed it down to a Magnaflow 14830 with the dual tip exhaust/outlet. However, my hang up is regarding the inlet muffler size. A search of the blogs has indicated the stock 430 outlet to the muffler is on the order of 2.75", while this muffler (as well as others I've seen suggested on this/other blogs for W208 installation) don't match that, specifically, have smaller openings (the 14830 has a 2.25 inlet opening).

Is this something which should be held to 1 to 1 in matching the diameters, or is this common and not as much of a design/install criteria it is may seem for any decent muffler guy?
