Would low or dead key battery cause car to stall?

Would low or dead key battery cause car to stall?
I have a 2005 CLK55 that is rarely driven and a message popped up saying that key battery needs replacement. Car has Keyless Go
I was driving car this evening and when coming to a signal light the car stalled and I had trouble starting it. I eventually put key into slot and got it to start but 5 min later it stalled again when approaching a signal light.
Can the low key battery cause this to happen? Is it similar to trying to drive off while keys are not in car or with driver?

the batteries in the Smartkey only (only) serve to support the convenience
feature (roof/door open/close) and activating the door locks. the ignition system
is passive and operates through induction. if you remove the batteries, you will
find that the Smartkey will continue to interrogate successfully with the ignition
locking system

thanks for the replies. I will leave car at mechanic instead of picking it up and chancing another stall. had it towed there last night before thinking of key battery question.

My first guess would be cam or crank sensor. A few months ago, our CLK just would refuse to start on occassion. It would crank but wouldn't turn over. Then, after a couple of minutes, it would start and run fine. This was with keyless go or with the key in the ignition. Replaced the batteries in both keys (as we got the message on the display for both), but no good. Took it in to be looked at before we went someplace and got stuck with a car that wouldn't start. It was one of those sensors - I forget which one now. It wasn't much to replace it, and the shop said that is a common problem.

I can help you fix that if you don't work on your car yourself. I work on cars on the side.
I have done numerous things on my CLK55 as well as other Europeans. I live in Keller, Tx (North Fort Worth).

Hi JYO,
Sorry for the late response - I don't get here much.
I take the car to an independent shop. If I remember right, it was less than $200 to replace the sensor, and might have been more like $125. I would have to look it up.

So much for my memory! I looked it up last night. It was the crank sensor (and I had forgotten that the CEL used to come on when it happened, then would clear later). And we paid $218. The part itself was $147.50.
