Rather than pay my Indy $657 to replace the cylinder(valve)cover gaskets is this a job that I should tackle myself? I would think that it isn't that complicated. Thoughts?

Valve cover gasket or head gasket? Big difference. Valve cover not so bad. Head gasket alot more involving.

And if you're not clear on the difference already? Not confidence inspiring.

Must be valve cover for that price. Not hard, just have to be slow, methodical and clean to get a perfect seal. And don't overtighten the bolts.

blackbenzz-Valve cover gaskets. I've priced the parts and including breather hoses(4) I'll have about $75-80 invested.

It's not a difficult job at all. That said, I've seen people with no mechanical ability foul up far easier tasks.

The OE valve cover gaskets are $25 per side. Most aftermarket ones are $10 per side. So your mechanic is charging about $600 for their labor. And there is a pretty good chance that they'll call and say one (or more) of the old hardened vacuum lines broke. Those are easy to replace as well, but they will be extra.

You can do it yourself if you know how to work on cars. It's not that bad at all. If you were local I'd help you out
