major SNAFU with H&R springs on CLK55

just installed the H&R springs for my '01 CLK55. original setup was stock springs, #4 pads in front, #2 in rear. I have the Monoblock II's off an E55 (8"front 235/40/18, 9"rear 265/35/18 with S02's)

the result: BAAAAAD. the car was WAAAY too low. when i say low, i mean it was SLAMMED - top of wheel was much higher than the top of the arch. wheels were "tucked" into the arches - NOT the look i wanted! (wanted some mild lowering); before and after measurements was 2 1/4 inches lower in front, 2 1/8 inches lower in back!!!!

it appears that the springs were incorrectly boxed, or incorrectly manufactured.

this is being resolved between my installer (a reputable installer / alignment shop) and H&R. will keep you all posted.

i am NOT a happy chappy.

Sad news indeed

You may consider sourcing the euro CLK55 suspension. Shorter and more aggressive looking.....it looks 'right'

Good luck!

5439cc - how on earth did you manage to get 10" rims + 20mm spacers under the arches????? damn that must be tight. can you email me pics?

did you need to get the fenders rolled? i've been quoted $200 (front only) in the bay area to get my fenders rolled just in case the fitment is too tight.

I think you tires might have been to tall as well for CLK55 (w208)

I have seen couple CLK W208 with 18" mono combo with 225/40/18 and 255/35/18

just a thought..

Boz,

Where did you buy the springs? Have you verified that they are the correct part # for the CLK55? The w208 55 has different springs than the 320/430 and both vary depending on whether the car is a coupe or convertible.

Your part # should read: 29377

Thanks,

Ben

yes, the part number from the springs was correct. what we (me, installer, supplier) feel happened, is that either the wrong steel stock was used, or the spring was incorrectly stamped. one way or another its wrong.

just spoke with the supplier. H&R will be recalling the springs, and then testing them on their equipment to see what the story is. my supplier assured me that either H&R or the supplier would pick up the labor cost of install + de-install (~$640!!). of course, this'll happen AFTER they test the springs.

i'm pretty damn gun-shy regarding aftermarket springs after all this.

All this talks about the spring being too low

and I am even more curious to see what the drop looks like on your car.

I think any pic would be great, as I have lowered one of my friends CLK320.
Just help to see if the car really way too slammed than its supposed too....

Since the sense of perfect height for everyone is different..

my installer has before and after install pics of my car. he owes it to me, so i can get it to H&R and the supplier. when i get them, i'll post it.
